Let’s go a little deeper: 🏡 Glass tanks do have great points: they’re so much better in keeping the humidity than wood (they don’t rot or develop mold), easier to clean etc. But there’s something important to consider: tortoises do NOT understand clear surfaces or colors like white, so the fact that they’re surrounded by glass (from which they can see through) is a huge source of stress for them. This is why a lot of times you will see them trying to escape, climbing on the walls or even hitting them. A simple yet effective method to prevent this is by adding adhesive paper (or common decorative paper) all around the glass to build up a barrier of around 6/8 inches. 🪵 There are a lot of controversial opinions regarding bark. From my experience (along with the one of reputable breeders and my community’s), the problems with it are at least 3: - A lot of tortoise species (the ones from the Testudo family like Mia, for example) feel the need to bury into the substrate when sleeping. - Some tortoises tend to ingest bark, reason why you can find a lot of warnings in reptile bark bags saying “don’t feed your tortoise directly on this substrate” and such. However, this never happened to me with Mia, so it’s important to watch out your tortoise behavior about it. - Most barks are not able to keep the right levels of humidity, which is crucial for an healthy growth and to prevent major health issues such as pyramiding, bladder stones, respiratory infections and so on. The only bark I find suitable for this purpose is Forest Floor by @zoomedlabs , which I use as a topper on the outside part of Mia’s enclosure and recommend. 🫒 Olive oil is often used to condition the shell or as a way to increase hydration in case of dryness. This is highly unadvised and totally unnecessary: oil will only clog up the pores, preventing the tortoise from “breathing” through the shell (as we do through our skin). Overheating 🔥 Glass enclosures hold heat, creating a "greenhouse effect." Without proper airflow, temperatures can rise too high, causing heat stress or dehydration. 4. Limited Space 📏 Tanks are often too small for a tortoise to roam freely. Indian Star Tortoises need a large, open space to move naturally. 5. Inadequate UVB Exposure 💡 UVB light does not penetrate glass well, meaning your tortoise will not get enough UVB for proper shell and bone health.
