很多人第一眼會覺得是英國國旗，但更精確地說，它其實是英國的「海旗」（Ensign），和我們平常在陸地上看到的國旗不太一樣！
以英國為例，他們在海上使用的是一整套不同的旗幟系統。最常見的是Red Ensign（紅底、左上角有 Union Jack），主要給民用船隻使用；而White Ensign則是英國皇家海軍專用，Blue Ensign則多用在政府或特定授權船隻。
為什麼要分這麼細？因為在海上，「你是誰」很重要。
不是只有國籍，還包含你的身份：軍艦、政府船，還是民間船隻？這些資訊，透過旗幟一眼就能辨識。而我們平常看到的Union Jack，反而主要是「陸地用」或象徵性的國旗，在航海上不會直接拿來當作正式的船尾旗使用。
在帆船上，海旗最基本的用法，是掛在船尾，表示船隻的國籍。
除了國籍旗之外，航行中還會用到各種訊息：進港時升起「Q 旗」表示請求檢疫、還沒完成入境手續；需要通訊時也可以用旗語傳遞訊息。甚至在進出不同國家水域時，也會同時懸掛對方國家的「禮貌旗」（courtesy flag），表示尊重。
這些東西，在現代看起來好像有點「復古」。
但當真的在海上航行，尤其進出不同國家的港口時，會發現這是一種不用開口，就能讓全世界理解你的方式！

At first glance, many people think it’s the British national flag. But more accurately, it’s a British ensign—a maritime flag, which is different from the flag most people see on land.
In the UK, there is an entire system of flags used at sea.
The most common is the Red Ensign (red background with the Union Jack in the top left corner), mainly used by civilian vessels. The White Ensign is reserved for the Royal Navy, while the Blue Ensign is typically used by government vessels or specially authorized ships.
At sea, flags show not only your nationality but your identity: navy ship, government vessel, or private boat. All of that can be recognized at a glance through flags.
Interestingly, the Union Jack that most people know is mainly used on land or for symbolic purposes. In maritime practice, it is not normally flown as the official stern flag.
On a sailboat, the most basic use of an ensign is at the stern, where it shows the vessel’s nationality.
And that’s only the beginning.
During a voyage, many other flags are used as well. For example, the Q flag is raised when entering port to request quarantine clearance before immigration procedures are completed. Signal flags can also be used to communicate messages.
When entering another country’s waters, boats often fly that nation’s courtesy flag as a sign of respect.
Today, all of this may seem a little old-fashioned.
But once you’re truly out at sea, especially entering and leaving foreign ports, you realize these flags are a way to be understood anywhere in the world, without saying a word.
