ITSo today, let’s talk about Easter eggs. There are a lot of folks out there who believe the Easter holiday has pagan origins. One of the more common myths is that Easter eggs are associated with some pagan fertility goddess like Ishtar or Eostre.
But actually Easter eggs are Catholic. As part of Lent, medieval Christians would fast dairy and poultry as well as meat. They would hard boil the eggs and save them for Easter or Paschal celebrations. Dyeing Easter eggs also came from this tradition – they were most often dyed red symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice.
One of the more interesting authors to pedal the whole “Easter is pagan” idea? Jacob Grimm of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. So, if you’re willing to believe in Hansel and Gretel or Rapunzel, feel free to believe Easter is a pagan holiday as well.
It’s okay to be Catholic.
