ZEFrom our earliest stories, powerful women are framed as dangerous. The witch, the hag, the stepmother, the crone in the woods. She is not curious or complex. She is a warning, and none of this is accidental. It is intentional conditioning.
Across folklore, fairy tales, religion, and later mass media, feminine power that exists outside male approval is coded as threatening. Women who live alone, age without apology, refuse submission and domestication, or hold knowledge are cast as villains. Repeated over generations, these narratives become subliminal. They teach girls to fear their own authority and mistrust other women. This is internalised misogyny at work, through insidious constant repetition.
Fairy tales were shaped during periods of intense social control, particularly in early modern Europe, alongside witch hunts, inheritance laws, and the consolidation of patriarchal power. The wicked witch became a propaganda device. A way to enforce obedience without naming it.
But look closer. The so-called villains are often the most sovereign figures in the story. The hagwitch lives beyond the village. She answers to no king. She knows the land, the seasons, the old rules. She is feared because she cannot be controlled.
Reclaiming the hagwitch is not about glorifying harm or cruelty. It is about questioning why autonomy, age, independence, and knowledge were framed as monstrous in the first place. The hag is the woman who survived. The woman who remembers. The woman who did not make herself invisible.
When we look to fairytale villains as mirrors instead of warnings, the spell breaks. What was called “evil“ is often just a woman who set boundaries, claimed authority, or refused to be agreeable.
That power still lives in you. It always has.
