That’s why time in the market always beats trying to time it.
Now, that doesn’t mean you ignore opportunities when they come up. If I see a market correction or a drop of 10 percent or more and I have extra cash available, I’ll absolutely put more money in. That’s just being strategic.
But the key word is available. The people who get “wiped out” aren’t victims of the market. They’re victims of their own decisions. They chased hype, invested money they needed soon, or panicked and sold at the bottom.
When someone says, “I knew someone who lost everything in 2008,” what they’re really describing is a lack of diversification and emotional discipline. The market itself recovered and then tripled.
If you had held a properly diversified portfolio, reinvested dividends, and stayed consistent, that crash would have become one of the best buying opportunities of your lifetime.
Investing has always rewarded patience. Even if you bought at a high, history shows that staying invested long enough smooths out almost everything. The people who try to time it never get back in at the right time because fear convinces them to wait for the “perfect moment” that never comes.
And if you’re worried about risk, that’s exactly what diversification and proper time horizons are for. You shouldn’t be investing money you’ll need in the next five years. That’s how you keep short-term volatility from becoming a real problem.
