_OWe met at 21. I was going to school in California and Kev was living in Toronto. We dated long-distance for 3 years from the get-go, without modern conveniences like texting or FaceTime. We spoke on landline phones and racked up the long distance bills. Our main method of communication was email, which meant setting aside time and thoughtfully crafting a message. My, how the dating landscape has changed! And yet I’m grateful for the way we started. We built a friendship from the ground up, which required an investment of our time, our thoughts, and considerable patience. 20 years later, I can see how our marriage is sustained by friendship. We are homebodies who’s idea of a good time is cozying up with popcorn and a blanket and watching a Netflix documentary. It’s been 20 years. Time flies when you’re having fun.
