Finally, for Day 19 of the #30DayMapChallenge (and also GIS Day!) - I built the animation showing how distorted our world really is in the most-used map projection online: Web Mercator. As always, fully in Python! Each country smoothly transitions from its distorted Web Mercator shape to its true size and proportions using a more accurate equal-area projection. You can see Greenland shrink, Africa expand, and Russia deflate - thanks to a series of frames where each country’s centroid is locked, while their polygon outlines are scaled, scaling factor converging Tutorial on YT!

#30daymapchallenge Dia 24 – Histórico 🕰🗺 Por eso, hoy traemos un compilado de casi 40 años de datos históricos del satélite Landsat 🛰 -desde 1984 hasta 2021- con la evolución de la degradación ambiental en la zona centro del país ⚠️ De este a oeste, vemos que hay diferentes elementos que se ven trastocados por el avance del cambio climático, la desertificación y la escasez hídrica. Partiendo de la Cordillera de los Andes 🏔 es visible que desde el 80’ hay regresiones en la criósfera altoandina (en tono celeste). Un claro ejemplo de ello es el Glaciar Echaurren🗻 el cual ha disminuido su masa considerablemente, adelgazando actualmente 1,3 metros por año con un espesor máximo de 40 mts debido a la combinación de muchos años de sequía y el calentamiento global 🌎♨️ En el valle, los asentamientos humanos -áreas continuas de construcción en tono gris-, aumentaron desde 1975 a 2017 en un 2200%, pasando de cerca de 34 mil ha. a más de 782 mil ha 😮🏡⬆️ Los efectos de esta condición los notamos cotidianamente, pues los incrementos de temperatura al interior de las principales ciudades de esta zona responden a la rápida disminución o pérdida de la vegetación, siendo la tónica de la última transición que vivimos hacia la época estival con frecuentes olas de calor en primavera e incluso invierno 🙇‍♂️🔥 Al acercarnos hacia la costa, los efectos no son menores. Por una parte, la Cordillera de la Costa ⛰️ muestra claros retrocesos en su vegetación -principalmente la nativa en tonos verdes-, al mismo tiempo que observamos aumentos de zonas áridas (tonos cafés) producto de malas prácticas de uso del agua y los suelos, donde se han privilegiado intereses de grandes productores por sobre las necesidades de pequeños empresarios y campesinos 👨‍🌾📉 Complemento de esta evidencia es la disminución de cuerpos de agua (tonos azul oscuro) como el Lago Peñuelas 🏞, el cual paso de una capacidad máxima de 98 mill/m³ a no más de 1,9 mill/m³, lo que supone una disminución del 98% 🤕 Fuente: streamlit.gishub.org #maps #mapas #timelapse #cambioclimatico #climaticchange #chile #qgis #gis #landsat

This indicator measures the average time spent waiting to vote at the polls. Did I need 3D? Probably not. Animation? Only because I used 3D! I still remember this from junior high: "Election day is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years". Except in odd numbered years, elections are held for state and local races and initiatives, as well as school board and other special elections. Often these smaller races have a huge impact on their communities, as is the case with our local school board race in Durango, Colorado, with several experienced and dedicated incumbents being challenged on partisan issues, threatening the secular and inclusive goals of the school district.
