Released in Japan in 1986 as the real Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels took everything from Super Mario Bros. and made it crueler—poison mushrooms, punishing wind physics, and level design built to humble even the most locked-in players.
Nintendo decided it was too brutal for the West and instead reworked Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic into what Americans got as Super Mario Bros. 2.
Years later, re-releases finally let the rest of the world experience the cartridge that almost broke Mario.

MASuper Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. Released in 1992, it is the sequel to Super Mario Land and significantly expanded the scope and presentation of Mario’s handheld adventures. The game introduced a more detailed visual style and improved gameplay mechanics while maintaining the portability of the Game Boy.
The story centers on Mario’s return to Sarasaland, where he discovers that his castle has been taken over by his rival Wario. To reclaim it, Mario must collect six Golden Coins scattered across different themed worlds. Unlike earlier Mario games, players can choose the order in which most worlds are completed, giving the game a more open structure.
Super Mario Land 2 features larger levels, smoother controls, and a greater emphasis on exploration.
