ROOctober is AAC awareness month, and here is your reminder that AACs are just as important as any other disability aid, and its not as simple as telling someone “just speak”.
The videos of the AAC are from my bestie @minnie_and_marisa who uses an AAC as her primary form of communication. (She is also the one with me in the second to last video)
AAC stands for Augmentative Alternative Communication. AAC devices usually look like a tablet or IPad with a large speaker on the back. Most of these devices can only be used to use the AAC app and accessing a search engine. This is the type of AAC used in this video, another type is a device that uses eye tracking to use the words rather than pressing a button, this for people that may not have much function in their limbs.

TWWatching Tommy thrive with his AAC device has been nothing short of amazing. Over time, he’s come so far—now using it to help him with everyday tasks like cooking, getting dressed, and planning out activities. It’s become his voice, giving him the power to communicate and express himself in ways that weren’t always possible before.
We’ve seen such a difference in his confidence and independence. Whether we’re making dinner together or mapping out our day, his AAC device helps him stay involved, understood, and empowered every step of the way.
