AMWe are proud to announce a milestone in advanced hematology care: we have successfully performed our first red cell exchange procedure using the Thermo Optia system. This much needed procedure explained by Dr. Aisha Gwarzo, Clinical Director of Haematology, and Prof. Nosakhare Bazuaye, Consultant Haematologist and Stem Cell Transplantologist is an achievement reflecting our commitment to delivering sophisticated, life-changing, patient-centered care in Africa.
As explained, our patient living with sickle cell anemia and chronic pain, underwent a red cell exchange in which her red cells were removed and replaced with healthy hemoglobin AA genotype red cells.
Red cell exchange is a critical treatment for patients with sickle cell disease by replacing affected cells by healthy ones, but also is a therapy that can also save lives in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning and severe malaria with high parasitemia, offering hope in even the most complex situations.
This achievement demonstrates once more how equipped we are and ready to provide outstanding world class services to patients both within Nigeria and across the region, for complex haematological conditions and beyond.
