When I went for my anomaly scan around 21 weeks, I thought it would just be a routine check. But things didn’t go as expected. During the scan, the doctor could examine almost everything except the kidney area, because my baby was not in the right position. I was asked to walk, have sweets and come back. Even after multiple attempts, one kidney was still not visible. Doctors feared that it’s not there at all. The next day I went again early morning. After 2 scans finally they could see the kidney in a trans vaginal scan. This time the doctor said the kidney looked very very small, which completely broke my heart. My gynaecologist referred to Bangalore Fetal Medicine Centre, an advanced diagnostic centre. There they examined the baby in detail for almost 1.5 hours. Thankfully the specialist confirmed that both kidneys were present. The difference in size was because the liver sits close to the right kidney, which can sometimes make it appear smaller or hidden during scans depending on the baby’s position. That week was one of the most stressful weeks of my pregnancy, but it also taught me that scans can sometimes look scary before the full picture is clear. Early pregnancy scan - done to visualize and locate intrauterine pregnancy/ check the fetal heartbeat Level 1 scan ( NT/NB scan) -  During the first trimester(11 to 13, +6 weeks), there is a fluid-filled space behind the foetus’ neck called the nuchal translucency. An NT scan is done to measure the nuchal space and estimate the risk of any chromosomal abnormalities the baby might have. The NT scan also checks if the baby has a nasal bone or not.   Level 2 scan ( Anomaly scan) - A level II ultrasound done between 18-20 weeks, also known as a fetal anatomical survey, is recommended for almost all pregnant women. It is similar to a standard ultrasound but provides more detailed information. During the level II ultrasound, your doctor will examine your baby’s organs, brain, umbilical cord, gender, and more.   Level 3 scan- Done after 34 weeks of pregnancy, this scan is done to obtain details like fetal growth parameters, the position of the baby,  fetal weight, and well-being parameters.   Level 4 scan - Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to detect the movement of blood in vessels. It is used in pregnancy to study blood circulation in the baby, uterus, and placenta. After my last scan, my only prayer was that the placenta should move up so I could finally relax in my second trimester. When I went for my anomaly scan, I kept asking the doctor the same question while she was scanning: “Is the placenta high now?” After about 20 minutes she finally said, “Yes, it’s anterior high.” I felt so relieved. Then she showed us the baby on the screen… and it honestly looked like the baby was saying hi. I had tears in my eyes because it felt so unreal. Then something funny happened. She was trying to scan the baby’s heart but the baby was constantly moving and kicking, not staying still at all. She laughed and said, “I think the baby might be hungry. Go eat something and come back.” I was hungry too, so I quickly grabbed a meal from a nearby McDonald’s and returned. This time the baby was fast asleep, and she could finally capture the heart scan. But that’s when the real worry started. In the report she mentioned a small calcium deposit in the baby’s heart. She said it can sometimes be linked to Down syndrome, but since my earlier tests were negative she told me not to panic. Still, as a first-time mom… not worrying is almost impossible. We had to repeat the scan after a few weeks. Thankfully, by the next scan the deposit had completely dissolved. Pregnancy scans slowly started feeling like result days for me.
