A bit more about the cave paintings:
The Cueva de las Manos, or “Cave of the Hands,” is a rock art site in Patagonia discovered in 1941 and dating from roughly 9,500 to 13,000 years ago. It’s famous for hundreds of hand stencils (mostly left hands) sprayed onto the rock using mineral pigments blown through bone tubes. Alongside the hands are scenes of hunting guanacos (an animal closely related to the modern day llama).
The Lascaux Caves discovered in 1940 in southwestern France contain some of the most celebrated Paleolithic paintings in the world, created about 17,000 years ago. The walls are covered with dynamic images of animals like horses, bulls, and deer, rendered with remarkable movement and sophistication.

What you’re seeing is a lithophone, one of the earliest known musical instruments created by humans. Made entirely from stone, each piece produces a distinct pitch when struck, depending on its size, shape, density, and material. Early humans selected naturally resonant stones such as granite, basalt, marble, and even fossilized wood, arranging them carefully to create rhythm and melody thousands of years ago.
Archaeological discoveries of lithophones span Asia, Africa, and Europe, with some dating back several millennia. These were not random rocks — many were deliberately shaped, tuned, and positioned, often found in ritual or ceremonial sites. Ancient cultures believed stone vibrations carried spiritual significance, using sound in religious ceremonies, communal gatherings, and sacred events long before written music or modern instruments existed.

THHonestly, for me, it’s a close run thing between this and the contents of the tomb of Tutankhamun. This is a full size vessel from 4,500 years ago buried alongside the Great Pyramid so that the pharaoh Khufu could make use of it in the afterlife. Also, it’s one of two. It is the oldest, large, complete vessel that we have. I run out of superlatives to describe this.
Great first visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum. It’s as good as the hype.

FATree roots don't break through obstacles. They redirect and slowly engulf them through thigmotropism. Over years, the pressure builds to around 150 kPa - enough to crack building foundations. This vessel got swallowed inch by inch.
In parts of Southeast Asia, ritual pots were buried at tree bases as offerings. What looks like a random object could be an archaeological find centuries old.
