According to the most recent data from the Gaia spacecraft and Hubble Space Telescope, the timeline and certainty of the collision are as follows: • Original Prediction: A “head-on” collision in about 4 to 4.5 billion years. • Revised 2025/2026 View: Recent simulations suggest the collision is no longer a “sure thing.” There is now estimated to be a 50-50 chance of a collision occurring within the next 10 billion years. • If it happens: If the galaxies do merge, the process will take billions of years, eventually forming a new, giant elliptical galaxy often nicknamed “Milkomeda.” The “Why”: Gravitational Attraction The reason these two massive galaxies are moving toward each other is simple: Gravity. 1. Mutual Attraction: While the universe is expanding and pushing most galaxies away from each other, the Milky Way and Andromeda are part of the same “Local Group.” They are close enough (about 2.5 million light-years apart) that their mutual gravitational pull overcomes the expansion of space between them. 2. Radial Velocity: Andromeda is currently hurtling toward us at approximately 400,000 kilometers per hour (roughly 250,000 miles per hour). 3. The “Spoiler” Effect: The recent shift in certainty (the 50% chance) comes from better accounting for the gravitational influence of other nearby “satellite” galaxies, like the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Triangulum Galaxy. In space, however, the Sun uses a completely different process that doesn’t need oxygen at all. The Sun is powered by nuclear fusion, not chemical combustion. In combustion, atoms rearrange themselves to form new molecules (like wood and oxygen turning into ash and smoke). In fusion, the centers of the atoms (nuclei) actually smash together to create entirely new elements. Instead of oxygen, the Sun uses its own massive gravity as “fuel” to start the reaction: • Extreme Pressure: The Sun is so massive that its gravity crushes its core with incredible force. • Extreme Heat: This pressure creates temperatures of about 15 million°C. • The Reaction: At these temperatures, hydrogen atoms move so fast that they overcome their natural urge to repel each other. They smash together and fuse to become helium. Mass Turning into Energy :- When those hydrogen atoms fuse into helium, the new helium atom actually weighs slightly less than the hydrogen atoms that made it.
