Ready to Dive into the World of BCBA? Here’s Your Journey in 5️⃣ Steps! Step 1️⃣: Grad School Gig 🎓 First things first, gotta land a grad-level ABA program that’s perfect for you. Online ? On campus? Whichever one you choose, be sure to research their passing rates. If your already have a masters in psychology or special education, you may qualify for the BACB certification program which is about 8 or 9 courses opposed to getting a second masters degree. Whether you’re starting fresh or leveling up, the journey begins here! Step 2️⃣: Supervision Shuffle 🕵️‍♂️ 2000 hours of supervision might sound like a lot, but with the right mentors and dedication, it could be the best part of your journey. A lot of people get stuck at this step. Either they can’t find a supervisor, or their current supervisor isn’t meeting the requirements of both restricted and unrestricted hours. If this is you, you need to have a serious conversion with your supervisor about your goals. Step 3️⃣: Study Hustle 📚🤯 Grab your study materials and dive into the ABA universe! 🌌 Study, practice, take mock examples, invest in study materials that meet your budget and get ready to shine. Aim for at least 6 months of studying (EVERYDAY) to feel like as ready as possible 🤓💪🏾 Step 4️⃣: Exam Elation 📝🎉 Once you’ve checked all the boxes, it’s time to apply and sit for the BCBA exam. 📋✅ Nervous? I don’t think anyone walkes into that testing center without butterflies in their stomach. But you will be prepared and you’ve got this! Pass that exam and get ready to rock your BCBA status! 🥳🌟 Step 5️⃣: Celebrate! Or study & retake. So about 46% of test takes don’t pass on the first try. That’s okay. Once you become a BCBA, it’s not like they ask how many time did it take you to pass on your job application. So don’t be discouraged by any of these steps & remeber it’s not a race. Hey y’all!! I’m baaackkkkkk! To break my hiatus, I wanted to really address a common misconception in our field. Many think once you pass the BCBA Exam that you’re automatically a BCBA. Yes - you’ll have the letters, but will have the soft skills, experiences, and humility necessary to learn all else that comes with the responsibility? There are many things that I’ve learned in this field that were not on the test bayybeeee. My advice to you is to be coachable, because there’s more to this field than 185 questions. What are some things you learned as a BCBA that were not on the exam? ✨

⭐️ My #1 Tip for the BCBA exam ⭐️ People always ask me for tips for taking the BCBA exam and here is the one thing I always say: Use the dry erase board they give you! Here’s how - 🌈 Before you even start, number 1-150 on the dry erase board (there are 150 questions). Next come up with a code. For me, I put a check if I was confident, a box if I wanted to go back and check, and a question mark if I had no idea. This helped me remain confident throughout testing because I was sure of more answers than I thought! 🌈 Use previous questions to your advantage. Sometimes questions will have definitions or formulas in them. Write them down in case you need to reference them later. 🌈 Write down any other acronyms or pieces of info that you don’t want to forget. Is there is a formula you get mixed up? Write it down before you even begin! Passing the BCBA exam felt like a huge accomplishment, until I got my first caseload and realized I had no idea how to manage all the moving parts. Supervision, assessments, availability, parent training… it all hit at once. It took me some time to find my rhythm, but building a system that worked for me made a huge difference. If you’ve ever felt like you were thrown into it with zero direction, just know you’re not the only one. The caseload organizer is available in my store. The BCBA exam is more difficult than ever. It covers more and requires more knowledge and skill to pass campared to what any of the "early" BCBAs & BCBA-Ds had to learn. Likewise, the supervision requirements have increased and mastery requirements have included as well. So when I see so-called industry leaders, most of whom are white, neurotypical men, telling other highly privileged people that the problem with our field is "training", it presents an interesting scene. What data are they basing this assertion on? It is also worth noting that these "industry leaders" aren't actively practicing in the realm where most behavior analysts practice, which is the insurance funded autism services. If they do practice in these areas, they typically are not actively practicing because they are instead bouncing from conference to conference getting their bar tabs covered as a "business expense" while publishing papers that are smeer pieces and doxxing disguised as academic research. The privileged attitude that these people have do not help. Yes, I am critical of our field. AND I respect my peers. I am trying to engage in discrimination training so that we as a field can rise together. You, dear reader who are or soon will be a BCBA, are worthy of respect for your amazing accomplishment! Can we improve? Of course! And we can do it together. One way we can improve is banding together against these people who prey on us for their privilege. We can back each other. Create resources we can share, and fight back against private equity and other predatory behaviors! Join us! Be a critical friend! We can raise each other up and improve our field together! ♥♾️
