Did you know you've been reading barcodes wrong your entire life? 🤯🛒
We all assume scanners are reading those thick black lines, but they are actually reading the white spaces between them! When a laser hits a barcode, the black bars absorb the light completely. But the white spaces? They bounce the laser right back to the scanner's sensor. The sensor then measures the exact width of each reflection to create a unique code, which translates into the product number. Next time you are scanning items at checkout, remember that it is the empty space doing all the actual work!

INBarcodes actually can run out. Most use 12 digits, which gives around a trillion possible combinations — huge, but not infinite. That’s why organisations like GS1 regulate and recycle them so we don’t burn through the supply.
QR codes, though, are a different universe. A standard QR code can encode over 23,000 bits of data, creating a number of possible patterns so astronomically large it has 7,000 digits. Even if every human generated a billion QR codes every second for the rest of time, we still wouldn’t scratch the surface. In short: barcodes are limited — QR codes are effectively infinite.
