This startup founded by Dr. Kavyasree Manjunath is developing enzymes that can degrade PET plastic within hours, a process that would otherwise take over 450 years. Once broken down, the chemicals extracted can be repurposed to create new, virgin-quality plastic, making the cycle truly circular. Incubated at NSCREL, IIM-Bangalore, Apratima secured grants to fuel its R&D, and today, the startup operates out of C-CAMP, Bengaluru’s leading biotech hub. GMO is an acronym for genetically modified organisms. In agriculture, it describes modern day hybrids that are created using genetic engineering techniques. But technically, EVERYTHING you eat is a GMO. You wouldn’t have corn, strawberries, bananas, broccoli, if it weren’t for humans interfering and messing with the genetics of plants. Today, we use more precise techniques than randomly breeding or mutating seeds and hoping something good happens. In the US, there are ONLY 14 FDA-approved GM food products. (None of them are wheat, by the way. Not sure why people keep spreading easily fact-checkable lies). GM crops exist because they confer a benefit: to the crop, the planet, the farmers, or the consumers. For example, papaya was nearly eliminated because of the papaya ringspot virus. 90% of papayas today are GM: they can resist the virus that decimated their species. GM technology is WILDLY misunderstood, & that is used to spread fear about science & technologies that can improve our lives & our planet. A new study highlights the use of CRISPR technology to enhance Fusarium venenatum – a fungus renowned for its meat-like flavor and texture – boosting its digestibility and production efficiency. Researchers eliminated two genes linked to cell wall thickness and metabolic efficiency, resulting in a strain called FCPD that is 44% more efficient in sugar usage and produces protein 88% faster. This significantly decreased its environmental impact, achieving up to 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional production methods. Moreover, FCPD requires 70% less land and reduces freshwater pollution risks by 78% compared to chicken farming in China.
