Davy Jones from Dead Man’s Chest in 2006 became the gold standard for visual effects, and people still point to that octopus-faced villain as peak CGI. Director Gore Verbinski says the decline comes down to Unreal Engine entering the visual effects landscape, creating a “gaming aesthetic” that doesn’t react to light the same way older software like Maya did. Back in the 2000s, blockbuster movies averaged between 600 and 1,000 visual effects shots, but modern films push that number into the thousands, creating a quantity over quality problem. VFX artists say clients continually change requirements without proper planning, shot design is no longer a priority, and they’re expected to deliver intricate work within impossible deadlines. Studios shoot everything on green screens now so they can make thousands of last-minute changes in post-production instead of planning films properly. Verbinski recalled that the effects for Davy Jones’ tentacles alone cost as much as his entire 2025 film, and teams prioritized accuracy in motion and integration that modern productions skip.
