We care deeply about what our children eat. We think about nutrition. We worry about sugar. We try to give them food that will actually nourish their growing bodies. But stories nourish something too. They shape imagination, attention, character, and the way children understand the world. So the question isn’t just whether children are reading. It’s what they’re reading. Are all books equally nourishing? #raisingreaders #childhoodreading #momlife #readingculture #thevirtuereaders

Book Tasting at Middleburg Books The book tasting at @middleburg.books, part of the @luxuryreadingretreats, was one of the most special book related things I’ve been able to do! I have the perfect book list to amaze and entertain them. 📚✨ ‼️Comment LINK for my list of 40+ GUEST READER RECOMMENDATIONS FOR UPPER ELEMENTARY. ‼️ 😀 In my experience as a school librarian, I found that this age group loves books that surprise them. This is the third of these Book Buddy Reading Recommendations! Have you seen the first two? And what book is your child reading now that you’d like your own recommendation for? Remember: 1. If you read TO your kids, that’s great! Fantastic! Keep it up! 2. If you have an independent reader, a great way to keep encouraging this is by making sure they witness YOU reading for your own enjoyment, too! 3. To take no.2 to the next level, if you read an adult book that shares similar themes with what your child is reading, you can enjoy discussions on how your books are similar, different, how you both relate to the characters, and more! Which of these pairings would you pick first?! #childrensliterature #readingcomprehension #criticalthinking #bookrecs #literacymatters

It is nearly impossible to have one set spice rating system everyone can agree on!! Every reader experiences a book differently because they are reading through their own life experience glasses!! 👓 This is why I need more information when a book is labeled "spicy". I always try to be as honest and straightforward as possible when explaining spice- without spoiling or making others comfortable! 🧡 And of course, my dms are open if anyone needs more details or guidance!!

Yes… my school required it. No… I still didn’t do it. Early in my career I started reading books like Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller and Readicide by Kelly Gallagher, and once I understood what authentic reading instruction actually looked like, I knew that turning reading into quizzes and points was not how you turned students into real readers. When reading becomes about passing a test, the focus goes from the experience of the book to the performance of remembering details, and students quickly learn to read for the quiz instead of reading for meaning, curiosity, or enjoyment. So instead of building my classroom reading around AR tests, I focused on building a community of readers. Students talked about books constantly. We did quick status of the class check-ins where students shared what they were reading and where they were in the book, and those thirty-second conversations told me more about their reading lives than any report ever could. Students recommended books to each other, abandoned books that were not working, and discovered authors they wanted to keep reading long after the unit ended, which is the entire point of independent reading in the first place. And the funny thing is that no one ever came asking for those quizzes. What people noticed instead was that my students were finishing books, talking about them, and walking into class already reading because they were actually invested in their books. Independent reading looks simple from the outside, but building a room full of readers takes systems, structure, and a teacher who is willing to protect reading time even when everything else is competing for it. If you want to build real independent reading without AR tests, reading logs, or constant grading, I put everything I used into a free guide. Comment READING PLAYBOOK and I’ll send it to you.

This may be a controversial take, but if a book has any explicit scenes at all, I'm not interested in reading any part of it. Over the last few years I've gotten lots of book recommendations from good people who care about avoiding explicit content. Often they'll say, "Oh, this is such a good book--there's just one scene you'll want to skip." I always thank them, because they're kind and want to warn me about problematic content. But I never go out and pick up those books, and here are a few of my reasons: 1) Books with explicit scenes can be a temptation to the people reading them. Sure, the person may intend to skip the explicit scenes. But in the moment, when they're invested in the story, it can be a lot harder to skip sections of it. 2) It's easy to stumble across that section you were intending to skip. I'm a fast reader who can absorb most of a page in mere seconds--I don't want to come across a problematic section and then have to deal with it living rent-free in my brain! 3) Reading books that have explicit scenes, even if I skip those scenes, could cause scandal to others. The person who saw me reading the book might not know I was skipping sections. And he or she might start reading the book and be in for an unpleasant surprise. 4) I already know that authors who write explicit content don't share my worldview. I would much rather read books from authors whose moral standards are by and large the same as mine. I want to make it clear that I'm not vilifying people who choose to "skip the spice." I have lots of good friends, passionate about only reading clean literature, who choose to do that! I also realize that not everyone is surrounded by the same wealth of clean romance recommendations that I've found in the Bookstagram community. (Many thanks to all the incredible authors and Bookstagrammers who post exclusively no-spice books on here!) Clean romance readers, what's your take on this issue?
