The moment you finally feel safe is the moment you realize how unsafe everything was before. You spend years normalizing what you grew up with. The yelling was just how your family communicated. The emotional unpredictability was just your mom having a bad day. You tell yourself everyone's childhood was like this. Then one day your nervous system downregulates enough for you to actually see it clearly. The chaos you survived was not normal. The things you had to do to stay safe should never have been asked of a child. The patterns you learned to keep the peace were survival strategies for an environment that was breaking you. This realization hits HARD. You feel grief for the kid you were who thought all of that was normal. You feel rage at the adults who made you believe their dysfunction was your responsibility to manage. You feel lost because so much of who you became was built around surviving a version of love that was actually harm. Breaking generational trauma means sitting with all of this. It means refusing to pass the same patterns to your kids even when those patterns feel automatic. It means doing the work to heal what was done to you so you stop repeating it. You can break the cycle. Ready to do that work? Comment I WANT THAT and I'll DM you about 1:1 support. All the girls who had to grow up too fast… we got sons, didn’t we? 💙 I learned how to protect myself early. What it felt like to be emotionally left behind… to crave a love that just wasn’t there. So I built walls. Stayed guarded. Carried things I was never meant to carry as a little girl. And now… I’m raising little boys who love me so gently, so freely, without even trying 😅 And sometimes it hits me— this is the kind of love I spent years wishing for. Not complicated. Not distant. Just safe. Consistent. Real. Maybe that’s not a coincidence. Maybe they were given to me first to show me the love I never received… to soften the parts of me that had to harden too soon. To heal something I didn’t break. Because nothing changes a story like a mother who chooses to give her children what she once had to go without 🥹🫶🏼 #breakingthecycle #boymom #motherhoodunfiltered #parentingreels #momreels

There's a difference between being raised and being programmed. Here are 5 signs you were programmed, not parented, by your narcissist mother: - Your Identity Was Assigned You weren't allowed to discover who you were. She told you who to be, what to think, what to feel. - Emotions Were Controlled You learned which feelings were "allowed" and which would be punished. Authentic expression was dangerous. - Your Reality Was Scripted She decided what happened and what it meant. Your version of events was always wrong. - Loyalty Was Demanded, Not Earned You were expected to defend her, agree with her, and prioritize her—regardless of how she treated you. - Independence Was a Threat Any move toward autonomy was met with guilt, rage, or punishment. She needed you dependent. Through nearly 20 years of helping families heal, I've seen how this programming runs like software in the background - controlling choices, relationships, and self-perception without conscious awareness. You can uninstall what she installed. You can remember who you were before she told you who to be. Generational trauma passes through tone, reactions, discipline, silence, not just words. And so many of us were taught that obedience equals love, that fear is how you earn respect. But something powerful happens when even a child, not yet old enough to speak, senses the rupture… and chooses tenderness instead. She didn’t just stop a moment...she disrupted a pattern. This is what it looks like when the nervous system knows there’s a better way. That kind of knowing is what heals families. Comment COACHING if you’re learning how to parent—or reparent—without repeating the pain. I'm actually not even sure who went no-contact first, me or my mother. I stopped reaching out after she said some awful things about me and deliberately put my family in danger, and then she didn't bother call to check on anyone to make sure everyone was okay. And it's just been this way ever since. Except I feel more at peace, and she plays victim to everyone else. #narcissisticmother #breakingthecycle #motherwound #settingboundaries

I told my mother she was going to die alone. And I meant it when I said it. It wasn’t just once. It was after fights. After years of broken boundaries. After being a daughter who needed something she didn’t know how to give. Because she was wounded, and flawed. Her response? “Fine by me.” And then the day came. And I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t let her die alone. Not because everything was healed. Not because we suddenly understood each other. Not because the past disappeared. But because she was still my mother. I can count on one hand how many times I saw her cry. When I leaned in and gently told her that she wasn’t going to get better… that it was okay to rest… Moments later, a single tear slipped down her cheek. And in that moment, she wasn’t the source of my grief. She wasn’t the fights. She wasn’t the damage. She was just a woman at the end of her life. And I was a daughter holding two truths at once: She hurt me And I loved her, anyway And I stayed.. If you know what it’s like to hold both You’re not alone. I have realized forgiveness doesn’t always come in words or apologies….sometimes it comes in simply staying. #grief #complicatedmotherdaughterrelationships #breakingthecycle #motheranddaughters

SAVE AND SHARE THIS if you’re on a journey to be a better version of yourself for your kids. There was a time when tension lived in my body like it paid rent. A raised voice, a tantrum, a tiny pushback from my kids (or husband or even friend) could shift me into fight mode before I even knew it was happening. I wasn’t proud of it, but shame never helped me change it either. In this highly requested topic, I discuss how I navigated anger and the lessons I’ve learned. This is guidance with insight into knowing when you need to see a licensed therapist. Learning anger management wasn’t just for my kids. It was for me. For my nervous system. For the part of me that wanted to stop bracing for the worst and start feeling more ease in my own home. Every time I respond with more calm than I used to, I feel it. A quiet pat on the back, a little proof that my work is paying off. And on the days I slip? I repair, I reset, and I don’t make it a story about failure. What if the way anger feels in your body isn’t your fault? What if the version of you that snaps is doing the best it can with old wiring? What if changing your reactions is less about perfection and more about practice? In this week’s PedsDocTalk episode: Finding Joy: Breaking the Cycle of Anger in Parenting, I talk through the roots of my anger, the moment that forced me to get honest about it, and the tools that finally helped me widen my window. If you’re working on this too, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. Comment PODCAST LINK and I’ll send the episode your way. Final question for you: If there was one shift that would make parenting feel lighter in your body, what would it be? #BreakingTheCycle #CalmParenting #ParentingPodcast #InnerWork #ParentingTools
