LI✨ How I Studied to Pass the CCRN (90th Percentile)
Here’s exactly how I studied to pass the CCRN and score in the 90th percentile 🩺
I started with Barron’s Adult CCRN Exam Book — it’s detailed, easy to follow, and aligned with the latest AACN exam blueprint.
📘 Step 1: Review the Blueprint
Carefully look over the exam blueprint at the start of the book. Some areas are heavily weighted, so focus your time where it matters most.
I also took the pre-test to find my strong and weak areas.
Since I work in a CVICU, cardiovascular was my strongest — which helped, because it’s the most heavily weighted section on the exam.
📚 Step 2: Focus on Key Sections
I made sure to cover cardiovascular, respiratory, and multi-system in depth, reading those chapters front to back.
If you have time, complete the whole book — but definitely don’t skip those three.
After each chapter, I took every quiz and reviewed every missed question until I understood it.
⚖️ Step 3: Don’t Skip Ethics
To me, the ethics questions were mostly common sense — but a coworker of mine almost failed the exam because of them.
There were more ethics questions than expected, so make sure you study that section too.
💻 Step 4: Use AACN Practice Questions
Once I finished Barron’s, I moved on to the AACN’s official practice questions.
They create the CCRN exam — so why not study straight from the source?
I bought an AACN membership, which gave me a discount on both the 180-day practice question bank and the exam fee.
Then I just did as many questions as possible before test day.
✨ I studied 1–2 hours on workdays and stayed consistent — not perfect.
If you’re studying for the CCRN right now, focus on strategy, repetition, and understanding the “why.”

_NIf you’re looking to pass the Critical Care RN Exam for certification then you need to SAVE THIS POST!
I passed the CCRN in 2018 and these are the only two resources I used:
👉🏾 Barons Study Guide
👉🏾 Paul Marino’s “ICU Book”
You guys know by now my study methods. Questions. Questions and more QUESTIONS.
I took the Barons pre-test to identify my areas of weakness and started studying for there. I planned out 4 weeks where I answered at least 50-75 questions daily breaking it down by subject spending the most time on my weakest areas (it was ENDOCRINE for me UGH 😣 )
Then, I took a post test afterwards about 3 days before the actual exam.
The exam consisted of 150 questions (only 125 were scored, the other 25 items were for research purposes for the credentialing body)

COStressing about the CCRN? Here are two essential study tips:
1) Always look at what the issuer (AACN) says will be on the exam.
2) Start studying the topics you are weakest in first! (when I was a CVICU nurse, I started with Neuro, Trauma, and Endocrine!)
