Being a good therapist is one set of skills, and testing well is basically a totally different skill set! In the testing center, it's all about recall- the more associations we create for information, the more hooks we can cast to retrieve that information later.
This is called context-dependent memory. Studies show that when we associate new learning with sensory cues, we’re more likely to recall that information when we reintroduce those same cues later. (Smith & Vela, 2001; Herz, 2004). An underutilized tool in prepping for a big exam like the #NCE or #CPCE is using smells and color coding to intentionally train our brains to recall test answers.
Try this:
💜 Curate a color for each category of info you're studying for the counseling exam
❤️ Use color coded pens or highlighters.
💙 Use scents- like essential oils, candles, or scented markers during your study session.
On exam day, imagining that color or recalling that scent can cue your brain to retrieve what you studied.
