More homes have been lost to wildfire in the last eight years than in any other period in California history. The five most destructive from 2017 to 2020 burned down 22,500 houses. Just 8,400 — 38% — have been rebuilt, a Times analysis found. Construction rates after the fires varied widely. Almost 80% of the homes destroyed in the 2017 Tubbs fire in Northern California wine country have been rebuilt. By contrast, fewer than 5% of destroyed homes have been rebuilt after the 2020 North Complex fire in rural Butte County. Wealthier, flat, suburban areas have tended to rebuild faster than poorer, hilly, rural areas. Read more at the link in bio. As one of the longest serving Assembly speakers in California history, Fabian is a beast in CA and national politics but some of my favorite efforts have actually been the non-political strategies we have concocted where we stealthily managed covert operations to change a circumstance. Please continue to pray for the people of California who have homes in the paths of the current fires. Ours is safe for now, but this is the largest series of fires in California history so anything could happen. Please also pray for the firefighters who are doing their best to save people, pets, property, and for volunteers who are taking in members of their communities. It’s heartbreaking to see the homes of my friends, stores we’d frequent, coffee shops we’d go to, historical buildings, entire communities… gone forever. It looks like a movie, but it’s not. It’s real. Adding some resources to the end of this reel. Thank you for the reach-outs from friends around the globe. And for my CA friends, if there’s anything I can do, call me. Hoping these fires die down soon. 🙏🏼💧 And hoping this nightmare leads to reform around fire infrastructure, policy, money, accountability, and resources to make sure this doesn’t happen again. #California #fires #prayers #reform

"I don't know if I feel a responsibility to do these kinds of movies but I do think that belief is in short supply," @officiallymcconaughey told the Times' Josh Rothkopf at the Los Angeles Times Studio @rbc House. "Stories that can help people believe more themselves and take more care of what they give a damn about are good stories to tell." #TheLostBus is based on the deadliest fire in California history, the Paradise Fire, in which a school bus driver (played by @officiallymcconaughey) and an elementary school teacher (played by @americaferrera) try to bring a busload of children to safety as the disaster escalates. The movie was adapted by director Paul Greengrass from Lizzie Johnson's non-fiction book "Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire." But there’s another major earthquake anniversary in October that people don’t hear much about. On October 21, 1868, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault in the East Bay, killing 30 people. Because of its location in the heart of the Bay Area, the total population at the time, and its magnitude, this earthquake was one of the most destructive in California history.
