Here’s what’s really happening 👇 When you hold ice, your brain receives a sudden, intense sensory signal. If the body panics, the breath becomes shallow, jaw tightens, shoulders lift — and the nervous system shifts into fight or flight. That same stress response during labor increases muscle tension around the pelvis, making contractions feel heavier and more exhausting. But when you slow your breath, soften your jaw, relax your shoulders, something powerful happens. Your brain receives a new message: “I am safe.” This activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the same system that supports cervical opening, uterine efficiency, and pain modulation during labor. In labor, pain doesn’t need to be “fought.” It needs to be breathed through. Anxiety going into a C-section, whether it’s your first or a repeat Feeling anxious before a C-section doesn’t mean you’re weak, ungrateful, or “not ready.” It means your nervous system is trying to protect you. Whether this is your first C-section or you’re going into another one after a traumatic birth, anxiety is incredibly common, and completely understandable. For some, the fear comes from the unknown: surgery, recovery, pain, doing something “wrong.” For others, it comes from memory: your body remembers what happened before, even if your mind knows this time is planned and different. This isn’t a mindset problem. It’s a nervous system response. Bright lights. Medical urgency. Loss of control. Pressure to “stay calm” or “just be grateful.” All of this can make anxiety feel even heavier. And choosing a planned C-section after trauma? That takes so much strength. For many moms, it’s a way of reclaiming safety and control. What actually helps calm anxiety isn’t forcing positivity, it’s: • Knowing what to expect, step by step • Naming fears instead of suppressing them • Having simple grounding tools you can use on the table • Feeling prepared for how you’ll move, care for your body, and hold your baby after surgery Confidence doesn’t come from being fearless. It comes from feeling PREPARED. If your body is holding fear, it doesn’t mean something bad will happen. It means something important already happened, and your body is trying to protect you. Being in the last few weeks of pregnancy, where you know your baby could be here tomorrow… or not for another few weeks, can be quite the mental game. If you’re currently pregnant save this to refer back to in those last few weeks 🤰🏼 Our brains don’t love uncertainty, especially when it’s something as big as bringing a new baby into the world. But there are ways to soften into this time. In some ways I actually enjoy this transition, because I can feel my mind and body moving into a slower space. And that slower space is exactly what we need in postpartum to recover and adjust. Rest and slow down. Amongst the nesting, I make sure I’m building in breaks throughout the day. Sometimes that looks like lying down and listening to a birth meditation or affirmations. It’s a way of reminding my brain that it’s okay to pause when I need to. The chores can wait (a good reminder for postpartum too.) Move in whatever way feels right. For me that’s been gentle stretches or going for a swim at my local pool. Last pregnancy I loved walking, but this time it tends to flare up my pelvic girdle pain, so I’m listening to that and adjusting. Take each day as an opportunity you won’t have again. That might mean catching up with a friend, doing something that may be tricky with a newborn like getting a massage or going out for dinner, or simply spending time with my son just the two of us. And lastly, the thing that helps me the most: remembering that if labour hasn’t started yet, there’s probably a good reason. Labour is an incredible balance of hormones and physiological processes happening in both our body and our baby’s body. Focussing on that in the final weeks really helps me. Trusting that my body will labour when the time is right, and when my baby is ready.
