And they’re making him do the same thing there.” This heartbreaking line from a mother in the documentary India Untouched (2007), directed by Stalin K., captures the brutal reality of caste discrimination in education. In the film, a Dalit boy refuses to return to school after being repeatedly forced to clean toilets. What should have been a space for dignity and learning instead becomes a place where caste hierarchies are quietly reproduced. Nearly two decades later, similar incidents continue to surface. A study by the National Dalit Movement for Justice found that Dalit students in multiple states were often made to perform menial tasks like sweeping classrooms or cleaning toilets. Another 2023 survey by the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front reported caste discrimination in around 30% of surveyed schools, including segregated seating and discriminatory treatment during mid-day meals. When humiliation begins in classrooms, it reinforces exclusion long before children reach higher education. If schools mirror the same hierarchies that the Constitution sought to dismantle, meaningful change requires stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, accountability within institutions, and deeper social transformation. 'Why do you keep always telling stories of Dalits?' Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan says that he often faces questions like these about his work. His 2024 film Homebound is India’s entry for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars. It tells the story of two childhood friends - one Muslim and the other Dalit - making the arduous journey back home during India’s strict Covid lockdown. Over his career as a director and writer, Ghaywan has featured stories of people overlooked by the mainstream. In 2010, his film Masaan told the poignant tale of love, loss and the oppressive grip of the caste system, set against the holy city of Varanasi. In an interview with the BBC, he spoke about Homebound's Oscar nomination, his own Dalit identity and how he doesn’t want it to be the only thing defining his work. Watch an excerpt here.

If caste was originally based on what people did, the work or occupation they performed, then the identity should logically come from that work. But today most people don’t follow the traditional occupations their caste was supposed to represent. The work has changed, lives have changed, yet the pride and identity around caste still remain the same. So the question is simple. If you have never done the work that supposedly defined that caste, then what exactly is the pride based on? This line is not about attacking anyone. It’s about questioning the contradiction between a system that claimed to be based on occupation and a society that now continues it purely by birth. Around 1500 BCE, migrations brought different and often conflicting cultures into the Indian subcontinent. Today’s Indian population clearly shows mixed ancestry. Aryan and Dravidian genes exist together, and that mixing actually strengthened societies. But with the rise of Vedic culture, things slowly turned more patriarchal, and the caste system emerged to benefit a few, backed by plenty of archaeological and historical theories. So when people flex their so called pure Aryan genes, the joke kind of writes itself. Everyone here is mixed. There is nothing to be proud of in genetics you did not earn, just like caste you did not choose. Calling out misogyny and fake pride is not optional anymore. Jai Bhim ✊🏽
