FACan I just say that this is based purely on my own personal experience and may not apply to everyone!
The NHS is truly amazing and provided great support when I had my two children in the UK 🇬🇧.
I am genuinely grateful for the care and support I received and my overall experience was POSITIVE!
However, if I had to choose again,
I would opt to have my baby in Canada 🇨🇦 for the following reasons;
1. Birthright Citizenship 🇨🇦 🇬🇧
The fact that a child born in Canada automatically becomes a citizen at birth is a huge advantage. It provides long-term security and opportunities for the child’s future. This is something the Uk 🇬🇧 does not currently offer.
2. Flexibility with Birth Partners
I really appreciated the flexibility around having family members present during delivery. In my case, labour started in the middle of the night and I had to go to the hospital with my husband and our children. Not having to worry about where to leave the kids at that hour took away so much stress.
I remember a very different experience in the UK 🇬🇧 , where I had to beg my neighbour to look after my child while I went into labour. A few hours later, she called asking us to pick him up because she was getting ready for work. It was such a destabilising experience because I was still in the hospital and couldn’t have my child with me as that wasn’t allowed !
3. Access to Private Rooms
Having a private room after delivery made a big difference. It provided comfort, quiet, and privacy during such a vulnerable and emotional time.
4. Specialist-Led Maternity Care
My maternity care in Canada was mostly OB-GYN led, which made me feel closely monitored and reassured throughout my pregnancy. In the UK, my care was midwife-led, and I only saw a specialist if there were concerns. While midwives are incredible, I personally felt more at ease having a specialist oversee my care from the start.
Both Uk 🇬🇧 and Canada offer excellent healthcare systems, but this choice comes down to personal comfort, family support, and what matters most to you !
