Colombian President Gustavo Petro has sharply escalated his confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, accusing it of undermining democracy, violating human rights, and meddling in Latin America’s sovereignty. In recent weeks, Petro ordered the suspension of intelligence-sharing with the U.S. after American strikes on vessels in the Caribbean, which killed dozens and drew accusations of “extrajudicial executions.” He called for an investigation of Trump for alleged war crimes, saying the strikes targeted fishermen and violated international law. The friction peaked when Trump publicly labelled Colombia a “drug-producing” state and called Petro an “illegal drug leader,” announcing that U.S. aid would be cut off and tariffs imposed. Petro fired back on social media, writing: “Mr. Trump, Colombia has never been rude to the USA… but you are rude and ignorant toward Colombia.” Beyond the public sparring, Petro accuses the U.S. of seeking to influence upcoming Colombian elections and impose the extreme right under the guise of anti-drug campaigns. He denounces what he calls a “clan of pedophiles” bent on destroying democracy and protecting secret lists (“Epstein’s list”) — though these claims carry scant independent verification in major press outlets. They reflect a dramatic frame in which Petro casts Washington as a colonial power disregarding Latin sovereignty and human rights. Petro’s government emphasizes Colombia’s record on drug seizures — citing over 1,700 tonnes of cocaine intercepted between August 2022 and November 2024. He contends that the U.S. “war on drugs” model is failing, and that deploying missiles at Caribbean boats undercuts human rights and multilateralism. For the U.S., the issue seems less about humanitarian aid and more about military cooperation and regulatory pressure. Petro warned that the loss of U.S. helicopters and military logistics could harm Colombia’s security operations.

“A clan of pedophiles wants to end democracy in Colombia.” At a speech organized to formally seek an official apology for the systematic extermination of members of a left-wing Colombian political party during the late 20th century, Colombian President Gustavo Petro issued a scathing diatribe against the United States’ recent actions in the region, likening recent violent escalations towards what appears to be a brewing US invasion of Venezuela to regime change wars in the Middle East. Petro also alluded to the haphazard and extrajudicial bombings of fishing boats off the coast of South America, in which the US have killed at least one Colombian fisherman. The Trump Regime claims to have been targeting narcotics traffickers, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, including survivors’ testimonials. This speech represents the most recent escalation in a developing feud between Petro and the Trump Regime. Petro participated in a pro-Palestine protest outside UN Headquarters after attending the General Assembly, in which he voiced support for and encouraged protesters to challenge Trump’s policies. In response, the State Departent summarily revoked his visa. • • • #petro #colombia #trump #epstien #venezuela
