Ten units become a Ten Bar. Ten bars form a Hundred Square. Ten squares stack into a Thousand Cube. The child physically feels the difference between 1 and 1,000—not just by looking at a page, but by the weight and size in their hands. Montessori, but make it DIY What first drew me to Montessori was the math. There is something so powerful about giving children materials they can actually touch, move, and build with before asking them to understand numbers abstractly. My daughter is just starting with the colored bead bars, so I painted wooden beads to match the colors and paired them with our number board from @awandco to help connect this new work to something already familiar. As a teacher, I saw how often older students struggled not because they were incapable, but because the foundation was not always concrete enough first. That is what I love about Montessori math. It makes quantity visible, hands-on, and meaningful from the start. #montessorimath #montessoriathome #handsonlearning #preschoolmath #dıy

Ever wonder how children actually understand numbers? In Montessori we use materials like the bead stair so children can see and feel numbers. Each bead gets one number. That simple process is called 1:1 correspondence, and it’s how the brain begins to truly understand math. Every lesson is given one-on-one so the child can move at their pace — not the pace of the classroom. This is an extension of the bead stair presentation, so don’t come for me. 🛑 lol A child’s first presentation would be the bead stair alone. As the teacher observe their mastery of counting the beads and placing them in the appropriate order, they will determine when it’s time to add on to what they know. Personalized instruction is a major bonus to a Montessori education. #montessori #montessorieducation #math #montessorimaterials #earlymath

The Trinomial Cube is a tricky and engaging 3D puzzle that’s a favorite in Primary environments. Children build it in the box, outside the box, by colors, by layers, at a distance, and even blindfolded. But then… It shows up again in upper elementary, and — SURPRISE! — it actually represents what happens when you take a+b+c and multiply it by itself two times. 🤯 No other method of education provides these connections or creates the scaffolding that allows a 10yo to understand this concept. Montessori Work of the Day The Scale ⚖️ You guys! This little scale is the best. I’ve had it forever and have tried using it in so many different ways, but I have to say, this is by far the most successful. Previously, I put a variety of items with different weights in the box so the children could see that different objects weigh different amounts. However, this usually led to kids pushing down on the scale just to watch it spring back up, and it quickly turned into more of a toy. Now, I use items that all weigh the same. This gives them the opportunity to create various groupings and actually watch the weight increase. #Montessori #MontessoriWorkOfTheDay #PreschoolActivities #practicallife #MontessoriClassroom
