The opening glissando of Rhapsody in Blue was born in a rehearsal: clarinetist Ross Gorman decided to “slide” the notes as a joke, Gershwin heard it and said “keep it that way.” It was 1924, and it sounded like sacrilege—jazz sneaking through the back door into the concert hall. Today, it’s the most recognizable sound in American music. • Gershwin had three weeks to deliver the piece. He wrote it on the train between New York and Boston, listening to the rhythm of the rails, the horns, the urban chaos that no European composer had ever put into a score. The result was called “symphonic vulgarity” by purists. But he wasn’t trying to please anyone: he was inventing a new language, where Liszt meets Harlem and nobody asks permission. • Bernstein playing and conducting at the same time isn’t showmanship—it’s necessity. The Rhapsody demands a pianist who understands jazz from the inside, who knows when meter becomes suggestion. He breathes with the orchestra because he’s the one setting the tempo, but also the one improvising within it.
