DAWe don’t want to bring these into the new year. I’ve been in the cosplay community for 14 years and these are some of the negative things I hope to see reduced and actively discouraged by the community:
1: “You don’t look like the character”.
Judging a cosplay by someone’s skin color, weight, and appearance in general.
Most of us don’t care about being visually identical to a drawing. We want to wear a costume because the character inspires us, because the parts of the cosplay are fun to craft, because we want to create something cool, have fun and be proud of ourselves. We don’t need your judgment. We own mirrors.
2: Enabling toxic behaviors.
“But I want to be everyone’s friend”. People that overlook serious, harmful behaviour because they “don’t want negativity” are the very same ones allowing the negativity to grow within the community. If someone’s actions harm people you don’t need to be their friend. We want to cut them out and allow everyone to feel more comfortable in shared spaces , such as conventions. A friend to all is a friend to none!
3: Comparing Cosplayers.
You are allowed to have preferences and feeling drawn to someone’s work. What you’re not entitled to is tagging them under any other other cosplayer wearing their same cosplay, claiming how this person is “better”. I’ve also seen so many videos stolen by creators and put in a “online contest” to vote the best cosplayer, without any consent. This has to STOP. Enjoy the content, support the cosplayer, but let others have their stage too.
4: Overconsumption.
Fast fashion cosplay is rising because of many new cosplay shops creating trending costumes at a inhumane rate and speed, and people that think making the new trendy thing will make you famous. It won’t. Majority of these cosplays are then thrown away because they don’t serve their purpose anymore and you’re not attached to these characters.This behaviour is polluting and it’s also very damaging to your finances. Choose characters you care about, cosplay them at the best of your ability and put effort in the content making.
