I’ve been working on this piece for two years. It is my formal renunciation of the Catholic Church. I wrote the letter according to guidelines that were previously set for formal renunciation (though the church has since changed canon law to prevent anyone from formally leaving). @jenn_sutherland witnessed the letter for me. I sent a copy to the archdiocese in which I was baptized. The last step was a public announcement. Naturally, I stitched a massive version of the letter (hand couched) onto a funeral pall. It is called Exodus. It was displayed on a coffin. I then scored some holy water blessed by the pope. This is me anointing the piece with the holy water. Sooooo technically the pope blessed it. ;) Two can play at this game. I’ll post pics once I have the good ones. For now, here is me enjoying the last step of the process before the doors opened to the art show on Saturday. #craftivism #embroidery #feminist #letsmovetheneedle #artactivism #author #recoveringcatholic
