GI👇 MORE CATS THAN PEOPLE IN CYPRUS?! 😸 That’s right - the small island nation of Cyprus is home to 1.2 million people and an impressive 1.5 million cats. Why so many? Legend has it that Cleopatra brought them over to get rid of poisonous snakes. Others believe it was Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, in 326 AD.

It seems that, while both women might have had cats shipped over, cats have been an important part of life in Cyprus for far longer. The earliest archaeological evidence of cats being kept as pets (anywhere in the world) was actually found on this very island and dates back to 7,500 BC! 🐈

If you’re a cat lover, add this spot to your bucket list: 📍Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats. This Byzantine church is home to dozens of free-roaming felines! I also met many near Hala Sultan Tekke, a beautiful mosque next to a lake full of flamingos 😍
