My students were struggling to connect to their independent reading, and some were just not doing it at all. I had tried all the tricks, including feeling like a terrible teacher, but here’s the one thing that worked beyond choice, having an amazing library of options, conferencing with students, and providing time in class: 👉🏼 I gave each student one of these 👆🏼bookmarks. 👉🏼Along with students’ 20 minutes or more of reading each night, I tasked students with marking one key moment with a sticky note. That’s it. One sticky. 👉🏼 In class, I increased conference time with students: instead of once a week, I started using our five minutes of independent reading time to start class as time to conference with 2-5 students. During conferences, I ask kids about their sticky notes. This little extra bit of accountability and action gave students a clearer picture of how to connect with their books, and it helped me to better guide them if they were feeling disconnected from their reading. Here’s what it does that independent reading can’t yet: → Models what fluent reading sounds like → Exposes students to vocabulary they won’t encounter on their own → Builds comprehension before students can do it independently Some kids can decode every word on the page and still not feel or make meaning from a story. Differentiation, but make it snappy 🫰🏼 Adapted books are amazing tools, but I just don't have time to make them for every single book I ever read aloud. This strategy is so helpful for students and so easy to implement--even if I'm counting the pages and snap cubes out while doing a picture walk preview of the book with students. In kindergarten especially, a year that’s traditionally the point of entry into a child’s reading journey, Level A–D books are a problem. Not because teachers are doing anything wrong— but because these are often the first books placed in front of students. And those books? They include words students haven’t been taught to read yet. And, do not support the findings of Cognitive Load theory. So what do students do? They try to make sense of it. They look at pictures. They memorize patterns. Not because they were taught to guess—but because they were given text they don’t have the code to read. They aren’t being lazy, they are compensating. And that becomes the habit. Reading should start with: • words students can actually decode • skills that match the text • instruction that makes the code visible That’s how we build real readers. Save this for your team.
