The Anatomy of a Failure This is a classic example of why dynamic balancing is crucial in mechanical engineering: The Concept (0:00 - 0:02): The animation proposes a hooked drill bit designed to reach around corners—a common problem in carpentry and assembly. Rapid Prototyping (0:03 - 0:05): The engineer uses a 3D printer (Additive Manufacturing) to quickly fabricate the custom design, likely using PLA or PETG filament. This shows the speed of modern prototyping. The Physics Check (0:06 - End): As soon as the drill spins, Centrifugal Force takes over. Because the bit's mass is distributed far away from the center of rotation (eccentric mass), it creates violent vibration. The system is inherently unbalanced, making it impossible to control and ending up exactly where it belongs—the trash! Why It Matters: While this attempt failed, rapid prototyping allows engineers to fail fast and cheap. It’s better to waste a few grams of plastic than to manufacture a steel tool that doesn't work! This absolutely destroys an actual ruler, which would have been way too reasonable. I decided, because we were already being unreasonable, to add an adjustment dial encoder so you can change the length of the line.
