it’s here. a community for disabled creatives. after fighting my place in the disabled community for most of my life, something magical happened. i walked into a room with 50 other disabled women. and my anxiety dissipated. and turned to… ease. i suddenly realized: these weren’t the kind of friendships i was scared of growing up, they were the ones I’d been waiting for. i thought – how could I recreate this feeling? so i’ve spent the last year saying yes. to every gathering i could host, attend or be involved in that brought disabled community together. and the more i hosted, the more people started asking “where can we sign up for these events?” it made me realize, it isn’t just me that needs this kind of community. it’s so much bigger. so i listened. and sat. and got to work. and Disabled& was born. Disabled& hosts community-driven events made for us. whether it’s sharing an intimate dinner with new friends, swapping insight with fellow entrepreneurs, or mentoring the youngest members of the Disabled& community, i’m excited to save you a seat. xx april link in bio to join us 🧡 #disabilityawareness #disabilitypridemonth #community #representationmatters #limbdifference #inclusivity #storytime

As Disability Pride Month comes to an end, I want to get real & share a few things that have happened, just to me personally, that represent just a small number of barriers disabled people face every single day and why they show we still need real change and education around Disability all year round. 1. I got asked to work for free multiple times, even by big companies. My work has value, and disabled people deserve to be paid for our time, expertise and lived experience like anyone else. It's 2025 and no one should be asked to work for free, but we especially need to stop asking for anyone from a minority group to share their experiences to teach other and receive 'exposure' in return because it doesn't pay the bills. 2. A major contract was pulled last minute because my access needs weren’t considered. You cannot run campaigns on inclusion if accessibility is an afterthought. We all need to learn more about the accessibility of the places surrounding us & the access needs of others. 3. I received a ton of hate online just for being disabled and visible whilst providing educational content, proving that ableism is still everywhere. I get off lightly compared to many of my peers and it's not okay! 4. I had to fight for my friend to get their basic care needs met. Nobody should have to beg to receive essential support. And despite having hundreds of people behind her she still isn’t getting the support she deserves. Head to my stories to read more & help if you're able to. 5. I tried to advocate for myself in therapy, because there’s so little understanding of disability and neurodivergence and how they affect mental health. It leaves me feeling frustrated rather than supported & this is after having waited 2 years for more specialised therapy. This is an extremely common experience. And honestly? I completely, mentally and physically burnt myself out just trying to keep going. This is why Disability Pride Month can’t be just one month of awareness. We need allyship, accessibility, and respect all year round. Share this video if you agree and let me know in the comments what you’d like to see change by next #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityEducation

What do you think of the term “not yet disabled” instead of able bodied? I personally really like it, and one other reason why that I missed in the video is because not all disabilities are physical and the term able bodied sounds like we’re just talking about visible and physical disabilities. #disabilitypridemonth #disabilitypride

I broke my ankle, and let me tell you: using a wheelchair while Deafblind is an experience for the next book! In honor of #DisabilityPrideMonth here are my favorite things about using a chair. Thank you to my friend @drhsienhayward Dr. H’Sien Hayward, a psychologist and experienced wheelchair user, for patiently answering all my chair questions! Video description: Haben, a woman with medium dark skin, dancing hazel eyes, and long dark hair, sits in a manual wheelchair. She has a microphone clipped to her black, wrap-style dress, and a support boot on her left foot. Behind and above, a canopy of trees provide welcome shade on a summer day. I wanted to share a little more about Finnegan and what he does! He’s a very special dog. ❤️ I will say, I don’t need him (as a service dog) as much as I used to. He’s still very helpful at home, and there are certain situations where I’d do better to have him with me (in public), but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve been able to do things more independently. I think having a service dog was so helpful in showing me all the things I was capable of doing, while still providing that extra support if necessary. Right now, Finnegan comes out with me to places sometimes, but our favorite thing to do together is competition obedience! Like I said, he’s a very special dog and I love him a lot! 💜🐾 #servicedog #autism #autismservicedog #workingdog #dogsofinstagram #dogstory #autismawareness #dogtraining #akc #labrador #dogmom #assistancedog #loveonthespectrum #disabilitypridemonth #autistic

It’s #DisabilityPrideMonth and did you know that we have a flag? This month is important every year, but this year seems more poignant in the U.K because of the battle of the cuts that highly affect disabled people in this country. This month helps raise awareness and education, which in turn can help change attitudes towards disabled people which becomes evermore important when it comes to things being effected in government! This flag was made by the community and was designed by Ann Magill. I decided to match my outfits… and my prosthetic eyes to the colours. Green is for sensory disabilities. Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities. White stands for non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities. Gold/yellow is for neurodiversity. Red represents physical disabilities. The stripes are displayed on a faded charcoal black background which commemorates and mourns disabled people who’ve died due to ableism, violence, negligence, suicide, rebellion, illness and eugenics. The dark background also represents rage and protest against the mistreatment of the disabled community. According to the creator’s statement, black is also a connection to the pirates’ Jolly Roger flag, a general symbol of rebellion! (Information above from the article created by Lola Mendez) All my clothes are charity shop or vinted Silver star earrings from @kamcreates Green star earrings from @tattydevine Prosthetic eyes from NHS and @eye.mkr Video description: Kelsey is showing her outfits and prosthetic eyes inspired by the colours of the disability pride flag. Green, sensory disabilities, blue, emotional and psychiatric disabilities, white, undiagnosed and invisible disabilities, yellow neurodiversity, red, physical disabilities, black, in remembrance of the disabled people we have lost due to ableism, violence, neglect and illness.
