HIThe 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck Thailand on 26 December after a massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Powerful waves hit Thailand’s western coastline along the Andaman Sea, severely affecting popular tourist areas such as Phuket, Khao Lak, and the Phi Phi Islands. Entire communities were destroyed within minutes as the tsunami surged inland, sweeping away buildings, boats, and vehicles. Thailand was one of the hardest-hit countries, with over 8,000 people killed, including many foreign tourists, and thousands more injured or missing.
In the aftermath, Thailand faced a long and difficult recovery process. The disaster exposed the lack of early warning systems in the Indian Ocean at the time, leading to major international efforts to improve tsunami detection and disaster preparedness. Reconstruction involved rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods dependent on fishing and tourism, and providing psychological support to survivors. The 2004 tsunami remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history and had a lasting impact on Thailand’s disaster management policies and coastal development.
