Did you ride the legendary Thunderbolt rollercoaster at Dreamworld Australia between 1982 - 2003? ⚡🎢 This was my best friend & I riding it back in 1996! (and my poor mum trying to keep up with it with the handheld camcorder 🤣) The first ever coaster in Australia to feature vertical loops, the mighty Thunderbolt was originally painted completely white, but the loops were repainted around 1990 to their iconic fiery golden colour 🔥🔥 With its impressively long track, it was also infamous in its later years for being a particularly rough ride - hence the delirious comment by my teenage self at the end of this clip 😂🥰 Due to the Thunderbolt's deteriorating condition in its later years, the Big Dipper (aka the Cyclone in its opening years, currently the Gold Coaster) was brought up from Luna Park Sydney in 2001, and installed next to the Thunderbolt. The two rollercoasters operated side by side for a very brief period of time - just under 2 years - until the Thunderbolt was permanently closed in 2003, with the Cyclone ultimately becoming it's successor. Whilst the iconic Thunderbolt no longer exists in the park, the fond memories - and concussions from riding it, she was a rough one alright 😂 - still live on for those who were lucky enough to experience this classic Dreamworld attraction 💖 📽️ @gcthemeparkgirl @dreamworldau

On October 25, 2016, a devastating accident took place at Dreamworld on Australia’s Gold Coast, marking the first fatal incident in the theme park’s 35-year history. The ride involved was Thunder River Rapids, a water attraction designed like many river-rapids rides, where circular rafts carrying up to six riders traveled along a looping channel and were lifted at the end by a conveyor belt. Water for the ride was powered by two large pumps. That day, one of the pumps malfunctioned, causing the water level to drop quickly and several rafts to stall along the course. At the conveyor section, an empty raft failed to reenter the water and became lodged on the track. A fully loaded raft approaching from behind struck it. The situation escalated because the conveyor belt did not shut off, continuing to push the rafts forward until one tilted sharply onto its side. Four passengers were thrown out and became trapped between the conveyor system and surrounding structures, dying at the scene. The victims were Cindy Low, 42; Kate Goodchild, 34; Luke Dorsett, 35; and Roozi Araghi, 38. Two children survived because they were not submerged. Subsequent investigations uncovered major safety shortcomings. The ride lacked water-level sensors and had never undergone a formal safety review. Employees did not know where the emergency stop button was located, and it had never been tested. A workers’ union also reported that the ride had experienced two malfunctions in the three days before the disaster. Dreamworld’s parent company, Ardent, was later fined about $3.6 million. The park temporarily closed, and Thunder River Rapids was dismantled in November 2016. A new roller coaster was later constructed on the site and opened in 2021.

On October 25, 2016, a major accident occurred at Dreamworld on Australia’s Gold Coast. It was the first and most serious incident in the theme park’s 35 year history without a fatal accident. The ride involved was Thunder River Rapids, a water attraction similar in structure to river rapids rides found in many parks. Circular boats carried up to six passengers along a looping course, with a conveyor belt lifting the boats at the final section. The water was circulated by two large pumps. On that day, one of the pumps failed. As the water level dropped rapidly, boats along the course began to stall. At the end of the conveyor belt, an empty boat failed to re enter the water and became stuck on the track. A fully occupied boat behind it collided with the stopped vessel. The situation worsened when the conveyor belt did not shut down. The boats continued to be pushed forward, causing one to flip sideways at a sharp angle. Four of the six passengers were ejected and became trapped between the conveyor mechanism and surrounding structures, dying at the scene. The victims were Cindy Low aged 42, Kate Goodchild aged 34, Luke Dorsett aged 35, and Roozi Araghi aged 38. Two children survived as they were not submerged. Investigations later revealed serious safety failures. The ride had no water level sensors and had never undergone a formal safety assessment. Staff members were unaware of the location of the emergency stop button, which had never been tested. A workers union stated that the ride had already experienced two malfunctions in the three days leading up to the accident. Dreamworld’s parent company, Ardent, was later fined approximately 3.6 million dollars. The park closed temporarily, and the Thunder River Rapids ride was dismantled in November 2016. A new roller coaster was built on the site and opened in 2021. #TrueStory #Tragic #Reels #Viral
