Our founder Laura Secorun spent last week at the #EUOceanDays Brussels - and we’re still unpacking her notes. 👏 On the surface, the marine agenda is on the rise: The #OceanPact is gaining momentum. #EUOceanMission projects are growing in scale. And #BlueInvest entrepreneurs are building the future - from solar-powered desalination plants to algae-based packaging. All in all, the kind of week that renews your faith in this space. Still, as a communications studio, we couldn’t help noticing a few narrative tensions beneath the optimism - and we think they’re worth naming: 🔵 The blue bubble is real. The ocean sector talks beautifully to itself. Mainstreaming ocean thinking across policy, media, and public life is still very much unfinished business. 🔀 The values landscape has shifted. “Security” and “strategic autonomy” are now the dominant registers. Communications strategies that stay anchored to yesterday’s emotional framing will quietly and quickly lose ground. But pivoting without totally de-centering our original reasoning? That’s no easy task. 🖼️ Culture is not a soft variable. Messaging is often too broad to be sociologically relevant and too abstract to drive behavior change. Ocean literacy - be it scientific or vocational - needs to be built *with* communities, not just broadcast at them. 🇪🇺 Yet the biggest bottleneck isn’t awareness. It’s trust. Specifically, trust in the institutions designed to serve coastal communities who, in large numbers, even when they understand our promises, don’t believe they will be delivered. EU communications is not just about project “dissemination”. It’s about co-creating a scaffolding of shared meaning that can actually carry the weight of our collective ambitions. That’s the work. EU Commissioner @costaskadis visited London this week to underline the importance of close cooperation between the EU, the UK Government and international partners in advancing the blue economy and strengthening global ocean governance. After meetings with Secretary of State Emma Reynolds and MPs, the Commissioner spoke at the #OceanologyInternational Conference about the European Ocean Pact’s priorities and shared his views on ocean management and conservation.

These cultivation efforts focus on fast-growing kelp species that excel at photosynthesis, drawing substantial amounts of carbon dioxide from seawater—and indirectly from the atmosphere—far more rapidly than terrestrial plants, sometimes up to 50 times faster. Projects such as the Seaweed Carbon Solutions pilot, involving research organizations like SINTEF alongside industry partners, have established demonstration farms spanning hectares with thousands of meters of cultivation lines. These initiatives test scalable techniques for growing, harvesting, and utilizing biomass in ways that support both carbon removal and sustainable energy production. The harvested seaweed serves as versatile feedstock for renewable biofuels, including biogas, bioethanol, and other bio-based fuels, helping displace fossil alternatives while fostering a circular blue bioeconomy. Additional products like bioplastics, fertilizers, animal feed, and even biochar emerge from the process, enhancing economic viability. Although current pilots capture modest quantities—such as around 15 tonnes of CO₂ from 150 tonnes of biomass—the emphasis lies on proving cost-effective methods, refining technologies, and preparing for future upscaling. Norway's cold, productive ocean environment positions it as a leader in ocean-based climate solutions that simultaneously sequester carbon and generate clean energy resources.
