This is what one period can look like when you line it all up. Most people don’t realise how many disposable products they use in a single cycle because we’re taught to think about period care one tampon at a time, not over days, months, or years. Tampons and pads were designed for convenience, not longevity. Use once. Bin. Repeat. Cycle after cycle. When you zoom out, the impact becomes obvious, not just environmentally, but mentally too. Running out. Emergency buys. Packing extras “just in case.” It’s a constant background task we barely question. Period care has evolved. Our expectations should too.

Go slow, take a breath, and don’t force it. The right angle, a relaxed body, and a bit of patience make a big difference. If your tampon is not fully saturated, you might be using the wrong absorbency. 🩸 Using the lowest absorbency you can for your flow is important for reducing risk of infection, the general health of your v*ginal canal, but also for comfort. 🙏 Pulling out a dry tampon can be SORE 😭 Don’t forget, you don’t have to use the same period product the whole time you bleed. Changing it up depending on the day/your flow helps you make the most of your period. #periods #tampons

Tampons make period cramps worse: discuss 🩸❤️ One thing that really lit a fire in my DMs recently was me sharing a Google search asking whether tampons make period cramps worse 🤪 And it really struck me how much shame and taboo still surrounds periods, because we just don’t talk enough about our bodies or how they actually feel. I was literally talking about this in a black cab on the way to a Lily Allen gig, and the driver said, “If you’re going to talk about this stuff, I’m going to mute you.” “This stuff.” Like we were discussing something disgusting. Even the term “hygiene products” suggests periods are somehow unhygienic. And then there are all the euphemisms I talk about in BIMBO like “Aunt Flo” or “time of the month,” as if the real words are too dirty to say. It’s mad when you think that 50% of us have periods, and everyone else exists because of them. And yet it’s still so taboo, so shrouded in shame, and also expensive. The average person who menstruates spends £20,359. And it’s not just on pads and tampons. It’s pain relief, replacing stained clothes and bedding, emergency taxis after leaks, and private healthcare on endometriosis or PCOS because of long NHS wait times. 37% of people have struggled to afford period products and are cutting back on food or bills, or using things like tissues just to get by. This is why I’m campaigning with @clueapp to make period products free in England. You can still sign the Cost of Bleeding petition - we’ve got over 17,000 signatures 🤯🩸❤️ Someone in my DMs also said how strange it is that period blood is taboo, and yet gory blood from violence is everywhere. Meanwhile we’re still shown blue liquid in adverts. And you can’t help but wonder how different things would be if men were the ones who bled? PS I do think tampons make my cramps worse though, even if Google says otherwise 😂

Continuing the conversation around women’s health… I wish this was talked about more! Most of us grow up using tampons and pads without ever thinking about what’s actually in them, yet they’re used in one of the most absorbent areas of the body every month for decades. Switching to organic cotton period products is a simple change that can reduce unnecessary harmful exposures. Such an easy swap to make, and one I wish I had known about much earlier.
