FTIR stands for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. It’s a way of looking at how a material absorbs infrared light. Different chemical groups absorb that light in different ways, and the result is a spectrum that reflects what’s present in the material.
In conservation, FTIR is usually used to check a specific question rather than to give a complete answer on its own.
Sometimes the question is simply what a material is. FTIR can help identify unknown or undocumented adhesives, coatings, or binders when there isn’t clear historical information.
In other cases, including my current research, the question is about change over time. FTIR can be used to look for chemical features linked to degradation, such as oxidation products forming in aged paper, or differences between treated and untreated samples after ageing.
Because FTIR is sensitive to surface chemistry and can be carried out with very small samples, it’s particularly useful for paper, where invasive testing is often not possible or desirable.
What FTIR doesn’t tell you is how a sheet feels in the hand, how strong it is, or how it will behave mechanically. It can’t predict brittleness or failure. For that, it needs to sit alongside ageing studies, mechanical testing, and close visual and tactile observation.
Used carefully, FTIR helps narrow things down and check assumptions. Quite often its value lies in confirming that nothing unexpected is happening, rather than producing a clear-cut answer.
It’s a very ordinary part of conservation research, even if it doesn’t look like much is going on. 😬

FAKESRA ~ FTER ~ AGHROUM 🇩🇿
Chacun va l’appeler un peu différemment mais on se régale tous autant avec 😍
Idéal pour accompagner un thé à la menthe ou encore du hmiss (je vous ai d’ailleurs posté la recette juste avant)
Il vous faut :
▪️500g de semoule fine
▪️120g d’huile neutre
▪️1 càc bombée de sel
▪️200g d’eau
Mélanger la semoule avec l’huile et le sel 15sec / vit6.
Ajouter l’eau et pétrir 2 minutes.
Diviser la pâte en 4 et étaler à l’aide de la paume de la main sur un tapis de cuisson.
Faire chauffer une poêle légèrement huilée et y transférer le fter, idéalement je retournant le tapis de cuisson au dessus de la poêle.
Piquer à l’aide d’une fourchette.
Au bout de quelques minutes appuyer pour une cuisson plus homogène.
Retourner et faire cuire de l’autre côté, toujours en appuyant.
