NOKinda Interesting Things #243: The Felix Chevrolet Sign in L.A.
If you’re driving on South Figueroa Street and West Jefferson Boulevard, just south of Downtown L.A. Angeles, you’ll come across a giant sign with a familiar-looking cat — one of America’s earliest animated characters to become a pop-culture star. This is the Felix Chevrolet sign in L.A.
Felix the Cat was created in 1919, credited to cartoonist Pat Sullivan and animator Otto Messmer. Long before Mickey Mouse, starred in silent cartoons and became one of the first animated characters to achieve international fame.
Just a few years later, in 1921, Winslow B. Felix opened a Chevrolet dealership in L.A. under the name Felix Chevrolet — reported by some sources as the first Mexican-American owned dealership in LA. The business was originally located at 12th St. and Grand Ave., closer to the heart of Downtown. As L.A. expanded, the dealership eventually moved south to its current location at South Figueroa Street.
According to longtime accounts, Winslow B. Felix became friends with Pat Sullivan, who owned the rights to Felix the Cat. In 1923, Sullivan allowed the character to be used in dealership advertising — reportedly in exchange for a new car — making Felix Chevrolet one of the most visually distinctive businesses in L.A.
