Sometimes the best learning happens when kids take materials in a completely different direction than what we planned. 😊 The math center was set up with geoboards and rubber bands for creating patterns. That was the intention. But often children have their own ideas. They carefully stretched rubber bands around a large wooden cylinder block instead. At first glance, it might look off-task. But look closer at the skills they were practicing: 🤏Strengthening hand and finger muscles 🤏Improving hand-eye coordination 🤏Developing focus and persistence 🤏Exploring cause and effect 🤏Practicing problem-solving in a hands-on way This is why open-ended materials are so powerful. They give children the freedom to experiment, to test their own ideas, and to learn through play. What looked different from the original plan turned out to be an incredible opportunity for growth. In preschool, learning doesn’t have to fit neatly into a box. Sometimes it’s even better when it doesn’t. We’ve used the same batch for months and it still works perfectly for rolling, squishing, and building words. Sometimes I call out a word, and other times the kids pick a picture card and spell the word with playdough letters. Either way, it’s a playful way to practice phonics, spelling, and word building. Why this activity works so well: 🌟 Strengthens fine motor skills and pencil grip 🌟 Builds phonics awareness and spelling confidence 🌟 Encourages hands-on, sensory learning 🌟 Keeps kids engaged and calm while learning Our go-to homemade playdough recipe: ✨ 1 cup flour ✨ 2 tsp cream of tartar ✨ ¼ cup salt ✨ 1 tbsp oil ✨ 1 cup water Cook on low–medium heat until the dough forms a ball. Let it cool slightly, then knead in food coloring (kids love helping with this part!). 💡 Learning tip: Try making CVC words, word families, or sight words with playdough letters for extra phonics practice. Here’s an activity that’s not only fun but great for fine motor skills. All that manipulation and precision needed to place the objects over the patterns makes it a really great fine motor challenge! To prepare this activity you need to cut an egg shape out of cardboard and stick a piece of contact paper (sticky-back plastic) on the back with the sticky side facing upwards. Find a selection of craft resources that they can use to decorate their egg. Draw patterns over the egg using a marker pen so that they can follow them when adding their craft resources. The great thing about this is that it’s easy to remove most craft bits and you should be able to use it several times over before it loses its stickiness. She was so focused the whole time! It’s such a fun way to encourage fine motor skills, imaginative play, and sensory exploration — and it kept her busy for a long time. Simple. Low prep.
