My top tips to get fit over 40👇 ➡️ Follow the same workout program for 8-12 weeks and focus on getting stronger. ➡️ Eat enough protein. Aim for 1g per pound of goal bodyweight or 30-50 grams per meal. Try doubling down on the protein sources you already eat or supplement with a protein powder. ➡️ Take creatine. We can make create naturally but it slows as we age. Supplementing with it can help build lean muscle, recover better from workouts and improves cognitive health. My favorite is Recharge from @legion. It’s micronized so it’s easy to mix and digest, and it’s scientifically backed. Use SHAUNAT to save 20%. ➡️ Stay patient and consistent. Here’s where I went wrong I spent too long lifting weights that weren’t taking my muscles to failure. I was working hard lifting weights 5-6 days per week to keep the muscle tone I had in my 20s and 30s. But I was stuck. My workouts comprising of 10-15 reps, 3 sets were not working in my 40s! Even though I was taking every set to failure. I’m a Certified Personal Trainer. I know there’s a place for workouts comprising 10-15 reps, 3 sets. It’s great for beginners, endurance training (hypertrophy), injury rehabilitation and group exercise classes. Unfortunately this style of training isn’t going to work for us women over 40 who are well seasoned with weight lifting - if we TRULY want to build lean muscle & change body composition - in peri/post menopause. Science based evidence proves a smarter, more effective way to train women over 40 is the “3-5” method. The best part is you only need to do 2 x Heavy Lifting Sessions per week to get results! Each 45-60min session should look like this: ✨ 3-5 Exercises (single exercises, no super-setting) ✨ 3-5 Reps (heavy enough to hit failure by Rep 5) ✨ 3-5 Min rest between sets (full muscle recovery) ✨ 3-5 Sets (per exercise chosen) 💪 Here’s an example of an lower body workout using this method: 1️⃣ Deadlifts • 3–5 sets × 3–5 reps x 3–5 min rest 2️⃣ Barbell Back Squats • 3–5 sets × 3–5 reps x 3–5 min rest 3️⃣ Hip Thrusts • 3–5 sets × 3–5 reps x 3–5 min rest 4️⃣ Romanian Deadlifts • 3–5 sets × 3–5 reps x 3–5 min rest Remember: ✨ You need to be failing by the 5th rep. If you’re not, increase the weight (as long as your form is correct). If you feel your form needs more work, keep the weight where it’s at, go to 6-8 reps for failure. ✨ Keep repeating the same workouts for at least 8 weeks. This is where you’ll see results, not from random workouts. ✨ Give your body a 2-3 rest days between your upper and lower body workouts. ✨ Have a ‘Deload’ week every 3rd week. We lose the MOST mobility in our hips, knees & ankles as we’re getting older - and this 👆 very simple movement that you can do right in your kitchen (or bathroom!) helps fend off that mobility loss. 👉 Whether you’re 40 or 70, you should do a few of these every day. Build up to doing 10 reps in a row, slow and controlled (don’t just drop!), and gradually use less and less of the assistance from the counter. 🥴 “But Megan - I have bad knees…I can’t squat even close to that deep!” That’s ok!! Start with what you CAN do without pain, even if that’s just squatting down a little bit. Holding on to the counter really helps to offload some of your weight to assist you. Over time, you’ll build your strength and joint mobility. Soon you’ll be squatting just like this! 1. I bring my own food everywhere—ask my hair girl @volume13salon @shelbyandersonbeauty !! Meals at trampoline parks, the ballet studio, soccer fields. I refuse crap on the go out of convenience and choose meals from home that nourish me, keep me healthy and hit my goals. 2. I’m the mom walking laps at my kid’s practice instead of sitting on my phone. 3. I always grab a protein packed bite of something before I go anywhere, so I’m not a raging hangry 40+ woman diving into the bread basket bc I “didn’t eat all day.” 4. I keep breakfast + lunch simple and repeatable. Decision fatigue is real, and my goals don’t need chaos. I’ve gotten good at eating the same meals for a decade. 5. I’m not ashamed to share my pre-cooked frozen veggies and pre-cooked protein dinner from Costco. Shout out to the @tattooedcheffood and @amylufoods . 6. I eat when my body needs fuel—not when it’s convenient for everyone else. A meal schedule is one of the most important things I teach my clients to help align their bodies to their circadian rhythm. As a mom you know getting your kids on a schedule is critical, and that doesn’t change as adults. 7. I pass on food that doesn’t serve me—even if it’s “special.” My standards are higher now. 8. I skip cocktails at social events mostly bc I’m more “on” and feel better energized when I do. This doesn’t mean I don’t drink alcohol. I just prefer a glass of red with housewives over socializing and set boundaries around alcohol that helps me show up as my best self. 9. I leave early and protect my sleep like it’s part of my job… because it is. 10. I care more about hitting my food goals and strength training than running myself into the ground with intense cardio or being seen at the trendiest fitness classes b/c I know which gets me results. The 4 things👇 When I turned 40 & my son was 5 years old, I was ready for a change… My focus was to be strong & healthy. The biggest surprise was that chasing strength & health gave me a better body in my 40s than I had in my 20s 🤩!! Here are 4 changes that made the BIGGEST Impact: 1️⃣ I stopped doing so much cardio. I wanted my lifting sessions to be intense enough to grow muscle (aka get “toned”) and having so much cardio in my plan was hindering my progress... Instead I walk daily which does NOT compete with lifting, helps recovery and does NOT impact hunger like cardio does 🙈 2️⃣ I stopped avoiding carbs and instead use them when my body needed - pre and post workout 🏋️‍♂️ And I switched my mindset from a dieter to an athlete. My goal is to perform my best, which requires proper fuel. And remember, total daily calories impact weight, NOT carbs 🙅🏻‍♀️ 3️⃣ I stopped working out fasted. I did that because I thought it would “burn” more calories. But I stopped using the gym to BURN and used it to BUILD. If you want to build, you need energy (aka calories). Even a small meal helps you push harder and get better results 💪 4️⃣ I gave up alcohol 🍷 I took a break 5 years ago and LOVED life without it 🥰!! Aside from the extra calories, it is a toxin to the body. So processes like fat burning and muscle building stop ✋ until the body cleans it out. You don’t have to quit alcohol forever, but limiting it will help the progress you see 💯💯💯 Want the workouts I’m following right now to be strong & toned at (almost) 46 years old?
