For years, alcohol was part of my life. Weekends. Dinners. Celebrations. The hard days. The happy days. It was simply part of how we lived. But in my 40s, when perimenopause started, something shifted. That evening drink stopped feeling relaxing and started coming with a cost. Anxiety, a racing heart and broken sleep. I was exhausted. I wanted to feel better, have more energy, better sleep, and feel calmer. So in December 2017, aged 47, I stopped drinking. The first couple of weeks weren’t easy. But I stuck with it. And things started to change. I had more energy, started to sleep deeper, and had a clearer head. These are five things that helped me change the habit and stay consistent: 1️⃣ Learn what alcohol actually does Once I understood how alcohol affects hormones, sleep, the nervous system, recovery and mental health, especially in midlife, it became much easier to step away from it. 2️⃣ Redefine the reward I stopped seeing alcohol as a treat and started choosing things that genuinely nourished me. Exercise. Walking. Wholesome food. Time with people I love. 3️⃣ Change the evening routine Evenings were my trigger. I ate earlier, walked or exercised after dinner, created a calm wind down routine and prioritised sleep. New habits replaced old ones. 4️⃣ Give yourself something meaningful to focus on I retrained, built my fitness coaching business and poured energy into something that mattered. Purpose makes change easier. 5️⃣ Move your body Energy comes back quickly when alcohol is removed. Use it. Walk, lift weights, cycle, swim. Do anything that makes you happy. Movement stabilises mood and builds momentum. Now at 55, eight years alcohol free, I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to change. Sometimes “fine” just isn’t good enough. If this resonates, drop a ❤️ or share where you’re at. You’re not alone. 📌Save this, share it - you’re going to love it. 😍 At 53 - I want to take advantage of anything that makes me feel better! 💃 Moving the body feels so good. What a true privilege and gift this is! You need to try it. I am so obsessed with this lymphatic flow routine!!! This routine is a simple mobility and lymphatic flow sequence inspired by movements used in Tai Chi and Qigong. 👉🏻Do 1 minute each movement: 1. Hops 2. Body wave 3. Arm swings 4. Dead arms 5. Golf swings 6. March slap 7. Trunk twist 8. Windmill 9. Plié squats If you’re just starting out, you can just do 20 reps each move and you’ll be done in less than 5 min. That’s what I did and worked my way up to a minute for the full 9 minutes. ✨This can help reduce inflammation, stress and bloat; improve mobility, energy and circulation.✨ I’ve been doing this every morning about the last 3 weeks and I feel so energized. I noticed immediate improvement in how I feel and move. I want you to lift weights to be strong - but I also want you to be able to move well OUTSIDE the gym also. We want to live with vitality and strength. *NOTE: I have scoliosis and my spine is fused from T4-L4. I have rods on each side of my spine so I have limited mobility. If I look stiff, that’s why! Most women don’t lose mobility from age. They lose it from stopping. My mom is 94. I’m 62. We’re doing the same movements. You don’t need long workouts. No fancy equipment. Just simple mobility and strength. Most women wait until they feel stiff… before they start moving. By then joints are tight. Muscles are weak. Balance gets worse. Mobility is built in small daily reps. 5–10 minutes. Done often. Done for years. That’s what keeps you moving. Not luck. Not genetics. Daily deposits. At 62, I didn’t realize that my daily exercise routine should NOT have been taken for granted. I have to admit - I did take it for granted and just thought nothing of it. UNTIL - you can no longer walk due to an ankle injury and everything changes instantly. I have now realized so much and would love to share it with you. 1. It is mandatory to exercise our toes, ankles, feet, knees, and hips. We normally focus on cardio and strength training for our legs and arms but our foundation begins with our toes, feet, and ankles. 2. Even though we may be exercising each day - we need to be as strong as possible in ALL areas to endure an illness or injury - most importantly - our mindset. 3. When injured or sick - we need to focus on healthy nutrition to heal. Protein is key - and a lot of it. 4. Be thankful - yes - be thankful for everything including the setback since it’s happened for a reason. Be grateful for everything and focus on that instead of focusing on the injury. I can honestly say this has changed me to my core. I’m now on a mission to help women not only get healthy and fit - but to avoid injury and illness.
