HAFly season- nuisance flies by name and nature.
Flies not only irritate cattle but they can cause some nasty secondary disease such as Summer mastitis and Pink Eye.
Prevention
Pharmaceutical-Used a deltramethrin pour on today as a repellent, repeat in 4-6 weeks.
Cypermethrin ear tag are also available that last for up to 12 weeks
Other natural fly repellents include Stockholm tar and garlic licks- not to be used in milking cows
Environmental- avoid grazing include woodland areas and fields near stagnant water. These are fly breeding haunts.
Wildlife -a farmer informed me that the humble swallow is a vital part of fly prevention on farm, they can eat up to 850 flies a day, who knew?
