ARTom Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this film a year after winning it for Philadelphia (1993). As of 2024, he is the second of only two people to win the award twice in a row, after Spencer Tracy for Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1938).
Bill Murray, John Travolta, and Chevy Chase turned down the role of Forrest Gump. Travolta later admitted that passing on the role was a mistake. Bill Paxton was one of Robert Zemeckis' initial first choices for the titular role, but the studio demanded somebody with more star power. The novel's author, Winston Groom, had always envisioned John Goodman as Gump, who is a 300 lb man in the novel.
Despite the fact that Pulp Fiction (1994) lost to this movie for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards, Pulp Fiction (1994) writer/director Quentin Tarantino enjoyed Forrest Gump (1994), admiring it as a dark comedy and noting some similarities to his own film.
