USArmenian Genocide survivor Elise Taft was born in 1906 in Bandirma, Ottoman Empire (now Turkey). She and her family were targeted by the Ottoman government and forcibly displaced from their home. In her 1984 testimony, taken by the Armenian Film Foundation, Elise describes a moment between her and her father one night while on a forced march through Syria in 1916.
To our Armenian friends and colleagues, we wish you a Merry Christmas. May the holiday be as bright as the stars Elise describes in her testimony.

MIBetween 1915 and 1923, the Ottoman Empire orchestrated the systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians in what is now recognized as the Armenian Genocide. My family, like so many others, was forced to flee, escaping death marches, starvation, and the destruction of everything they had ever known. They found refuge in Egypt, but the pain, loss, and trauma followed them.
Entire villages were wiped out, and centuries of Armenian culture and heritage were erased. Our people were scattered across the world, left to rebuild from nothing in foreign lands. The struggle didn’t end with survival it continued through the generations, as we fought to preserve our identity, our language, and our history.
Despite continued denial by the Turkish government, the truth lives on. Our story is not just one of suffering it’s one of strength, resilience, and a deep, unbreakable pride in being Armenian. My family’s journey is part of that larger legacy, and we carry it forward with honor and purpose
