After the Great Hunger, we forgot our ancestors’ ancient tradition of lifting stones as a test of strength. The people of Ireland had been generally physically strong from manual labour (clearing rocky fields, farming, building dry stone walls), and would hold contests lifting stones at weddings and funerals. Those who succeeded in lifting them became local heroes for their great feat of strength and the stones were often named after them. However, after unimaginable suffering, emigration and societal changes, this practice was eventually forgotten, with these stones often lying in graveyards, untouched since their last lift. However a revival of this tradition means these sleeping stones are being reawakened to be lifted once again. This tradition goes back to ancient legends with several referencing mythological heroes lifting giant stones. No one tells you how confusing it feels when someone actually wants you. Like genuinely wants to be with you, without playing games or making you prove your worth first. Especially when you’ve spent your whole life being the one who cared more. The one who waited for replies. The one who overthought every text. The one who kept giving chance after chance just to feel like you mattered. So when someone finally shows up with real intentions, your brain doesn’t relax it panics. You think, What’s the catch? Because how do you trust something you’ve never had before? So you start holding yourself back. You type long messages and then delete them. You stare at the online status but don’t text. You pretend you’re okay going slow, when deep down all you’ve ever wanted was someone to just love you without making you beg for it. You laugh less, overthink more, and act chill even when your heart is screaming. Because let’s be honest this generation taught us that whoever cares less wins. That being attached is unattractive. That needy is a red flag. So we stay half-loved, half-healed, and fully exhausted. And we keep losing good people just because we’re too scared to show how badly we want to be loved back. But here’s what no one says out loud craving love doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human. Wanting reassurance doesn’t make you clingy it means you’ve been let down before. And feeling too much isn’t your flaw; it’s your honesty. You don’t have to keep proving you’re low maintenance to be kept. The right person won’t need you to be less just to stay. They’ll make space for all of it the messy parts, the overthinking, the soft heart, the need to be reminded you’re loved. Because real love doesn’t punish your hunger. It sits beside you and says, You don’t have to hide it anymore.
