Have you ever used articulated plates for your bamboo foundations? Our Bamboo Playground at the Kul Kul Farm features a special kind of foundation for our bamboo split beam arches 🎋 While one metal plate is fixed into the concrete footing, the other is embedded within or wraps around the bamboo split beam. We used this particular style of foundation to allow for flexibility in adjusting the overall form of the playground, before we settled on a specific inclination. Once we decided this, these arches were fixed in place and then we began to infill the form with a gridshell made from bamboo splits. Want to learn more about bamboo foundations? During the 11 Day Course students were guided by the @bambooubali team to build a gridshell on the ground and within 3 days popped it up into place with the help of a crane 🏗️ to create this incredible bamboo dome. 😍 . We build real structures during these courses and best of all is that we involve you in the process from start to finish. Not only do you learn all the theory about why bamboo and how to turn it into a long lasting building material but you immerse HANDS ON in building some impressive bamboo structures. . Built by Bamboo Pure and designed by @ibukubali, the structure rises with laminated bamboo arches and a gridshell design, resting on a natural lime floor. Inside, the space is furnished with Pintal Chairs, round and square tables, and nesting tables, each piece crafted to complement the architecture. The structure opens to light, air, and views over rice paddies. Tables are set under bamboo arches. We just released our short documentary on the hardwood bending-active beam-string! Presented at the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2023, Oslo) and the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures Symposium (IASS 2024, Zurich), this system was developed as a low-carbon, competitive alternative to traditional precast concrete or steel lightweight sheds, designed for the context of the Global South. In the short film, Eric Karsh from @equilibrium.consulting.inc shares his vision about the structure, while @evyslabbinck from @design2production and Stefan Rick from @sjbkempterfitze discuss their insights and the connections to the Wisdome Stockholm project developed with @blumerlehmannofficial. In the IASS publication, we also discuss key references that were fundamental for this work — the Wisdome Stockholm gridshell, Julius Natterer’s bending-active shells, Gion Caminada’s Vrin Halle, and the mind-opening work of @philippe_block and the @blockresearchgroup.
