The key to having more Microbiome diversity? Living closer to natural circadian rhythms. ☀️ 😴 🍽️ Examples include more sunlight (20-60 min) during the day, more fasting and darkness during the night. This is from an upcoming episode of my new podcast Save yourself – – the episode is fully available Monday. I think you’re going to enjoy this almost 2 hour conversation. @satchin.panda is the absolute leader in the space and his work at the Salk Institute really helps us define how we can use circadian rhythms in our real life. In this episode, we cover how it’s really important to sleep and wake at the same time, but also eat at the same times. He talks about how gut bacteria literally changes throughout the day and so to optimize our biology we have to time ourselves a little bit better with the sun and darkness. We talk about the ways to get optimal sleep, the ways to eat optimally, how to really improve that gut brain connection, how to adjust if you have a night shift schedule or an erratic life, tips to getting more fiber and probiotic foods and so much more. One big Takeaway that I got from this episode is that the more we help our body know what time it is through sun during the day and darkness/fasting the night— the better our brain and body functions.

Did you know that sugar can be more addictive than cocaine? The more we ingest, the more our bodies can crave sugar. Getting a daily “sweet treat” has become so habitual for many of us that craving extremely sweet foods is normal. Reducing sugar intake is difficult, but there is new evidence that nurturing our gut microbiomes can help. A study published in Nature Microbiology from Jiangnan University in China has identified a fatty acid receptor that can reduce sugar cravings when it is active, similar to the effects of weight loss medications like Ozempic. This receptor is heavily dependent on the composure of the gut microbiome. Genetic variations between people can result in differences among this receptor and different preferences for sugar, possibly explaining why some of us are more prone to a sweet tooths. Much research still needs to be done, but if you are looking to reduce your sugar cravings, targeting overall microbiome health will likely help. How do you nurture your microbiome? Three tips to support good mood and reduce stress @biotiful_gut_health 1- Go outside and get some fresh air. Forest bathing, also known as shinrin -yoku has been studied in Japan and shown to lower our stress hormones and improve wellbeing. 2- Include protein and healthy fats to your meals in addition to carbohydrates to stabilise blood sugar levels and support good mood. We know large fluctuations in blood sugar and the corresponding dip can be a driver for stress and anxiety. 3- Include plants and probiotics. The psychobiotic diet is a plan that includes plant foods like fruits, vegetables, pulse, nuts and seeds and probiotics like @biotiful_gut_health kefir and kimchi and was shown to positively support the gut brain connection and reduce levels of perceived stress .
