PAHas your child ever asked about an unhoused person they saw, either in real life or on TV, or in movies?
Sometimes what seems like a simple question to kids can be surprisingly complex!
While we might not want to overwhelm kids (especially very young ones) with too many details, there are some simple but important guidelines to remember:
👉🏽 Lead with empathy, and avoid using the person experiencing homelessness as an example or cautionary tale.
👉🏽 Don’t perpetuate myths and stereotypes! For example…
❤️🩹 Many factors contribute to becoming unhoused, the vast majority of which—like low wages, lack of affordable housing, sudden expenses or illness, or abuse—aren’t within a person’s control.
💼 Not only do most unhoused people report wanting to work, the National Coalition for the Homeless estimates 40%-60% of people experiencing homelessness nationwide ARE employed, but simply don’t make enough to secure housing.
💲 Interviews show that unhoused people spend most money they’re given on food and necessities like socks and hygiene products. While some might purchase alcohol or drugs, the same can be said of the general population—substance misuse disorders are not as common in the unhoused population as most people think. And just like any other human being, a person experiencing homelessness deserves the dignity of being able to make their own decisions and spend money in the way they choose. If you’re uncomfortable with that and still want to help, volunteering or donating items like warm socks and batteries is always appreciated!

MAA homeless foreigner from Spain name: Manuel Enrique Villaverde, 73 years old. He is a widower who became homeless after his Filipina wife passed away. 😭😭😭They had no children. streets, sleeping outside, with no food and no place to stay. For more than two decades, the campaign has demonstrated how the skills and generosity of architects can raise vital funds and drive meaningful change in communities across Ireland.
